Critics rated the album higher because she went from 'good girl' to 'bad girl'....it was the story of the 'new Rihanna' you should know that the media loves to build a brand new narrative any chance they get

it's only one song off the album, wait for the full album at least
She is a dance artist, whether you like it or no. She started the dance era with SOS, and she's not going to erase dance from her albums.
I am sure the album will have more urban sounding songs.
And she is evolving, recreating GGGB would be not evolving as an artist.
She came up with LTWYL just one year ago ![psyduck](images/smilies/images/smilies/psyduck.gif)

Rihanna never has and never will be a deep and serious musician, and that's fine by me.

Same for me

Been saying this all along, but the Navy just won't listen and call me a hater. I blame Deaf Jam for this. Nobody else.

She might mean RR but GGGB also had some of that.

Absolutely.
But where are the up-tempo yet substance-filled songs from Rihannna?

My main point is that we can't live in the past. Yes, Good Girl Gone Bad was cute and catchy, but we're NEVER getting an album like that again. Yes, Rated R was amazing and epic, but we're NEVER getting an album like that again. Rihanna has grown as a human and as an artist. Sure, she might not show it musically sometimes, but if she was interested in recreating past eras, she would have done it by now. Rihanna is all about change and risks, which is why she's always switching up her sound and look. Rihanna doesn't have to establish herself as an artist, as she already has in my opinion. Rihanna has taken the unconventional route, though. I don't get why people forever compare her to Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, etc. They aren't Rihanna, so of course she isn't going to be "on their level".

I don't want to judge Rihanna's entire 6th CD based off one single....however, Rihanna has lost some of the substance she had during GGGB and stepped up for RR.
|
What is more substantial about GGGB than Loud?
I think the songs are great, obviously. I never consider her cookie-cutter, but some people do. She always has edge I like, even on Loud.
Literally, I just want her to write more on her songs.

"We Found Love" is the most generic song Rihanna EVER released. It's just so simple and plain. How did she go THAT low?
She used to make quality dance songs. SOS, Don't Stop the Music, Disturbia, Only Girl, hell, even S&M, it's a total club banger.

|
Well if it helps RTW was obviously a horrible representation of what 4 sounds like. Maybe WFL will be the same for this 6th alberm.
