I honestly don't think some listeners know the difference between generic, and safe. When something is said to be generic it means that it is something commonly found. Something that is basic. Cheap. And most importantly offers nothing to differ itself from other material.
It would be appropriate to call the music David Guetta produces generic, Akon is generic, T-Pain is generic, Taio Cruz generic, B.o.B is generic, and even to an extent Bruno Mars is generic because all of their music generally sounds like basic dance tracks that could be found anywhere nowadays and there is little that differs from their songs from other songs in terms of sound.
Ke$ha, The Black Eyed Peas, Gaga, Rihanna, and Britney are far from producing material that doesn't differ itself from what else is out there. I think you would be hard pressed to find an individual out there that feels none of their work sounds like them or sounds as if anyone could have done it or something similar. They pride themselves on sounding different and having their own distinct sounds.
It would be more appropriate to say that the music they have recorded is
safer than their past work considering they haven't been pushing themselves into finding new sounds, and incorporating new influences into their music (if you feel that way). But the overuse of the word generic should be stopped, because it's being misused and misappropriated.
HIAM is not generic, unless we have all been missing the massive dubstep take over the past few years..
