Putting out an album can be cheaper than ever now. If you're not confident about your artist's selling power, put the album out digitally and on all streaming platforms, which basically costs nothing, make limited edition physicals for the fans and sell them via the artist's website based on pre-orders and book a little initial promo. You'll get some money and you'll also give one of the songs (or several of them) the opportunity to stick and succeed. Literally nothing to lose

bingo. labels are essentially keeping their artists trapped by not letting them flop and 1) get dropped or 2) get a fresh start

delays are confusing, messy, and prevent the artist from moving forward. sad, really.

These labels should take a note from Island and how they lunched Shawn Mendes. They released the album without delays and without him having a big hit and after the album was out, they focused on getting him a hit and promoting him. Then Stitches took off and he blew up. Continuously delaying an album will only make things worse.
