Not to mention it didn't reach its #2 peak until January/February 2010, more than a year after its October 2008 release

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is THE example of sleeper hit. It was marketed from the start, but it didn't do very well at first. And then within a month it had built and built and soon it exploded. They marketed the hell out of it when it started taking off - that didn't stop it from being considered a sleeper hit.

Fair enough. By that definition then, I guess you're right.

They were obviously expecting big things for The Fame, it's not like her inevitable increase in popularity was a surprise to them. They probably weren't expecting 12 million copies to be sold but Lady GaGa was never an underdog. You guys make it sound like she just came out of obscurity with a sparse little demo and a shoddy $10,000 music video that all of a sudden broke big.

Who said that?
The album is nevertheless a sleeper hit. They could add this to Webster's as an example of the phrase sleeper hit:
Quote:
"Released to little fanfare in August 2008 (it sold just 24,000 copies in its first week here in the States), The Fame slowly began to burrow itself into the public consciousness." - MTV

This album has NEVER left the top 100 of Billboard. Over 2 years and still not eligible for the catalog chart

Based on chart trajectory and sales, The Fame was definitely a sleeper hit. I'm not a GaGa stan, but the success of that album came out of nowhere.

Well, it didn't really come out of nowhere, it came from her amazing talent, beautiful songs, and outstanding work ethic, but the point still holds true. Interscope probably had very few expectations for this album

See, this is what I'm arguing about. If they "had very few expectations," they wouldn't have invested in 4 music videos + another one in the works, recruiting Akon and Colby, and promoting her album worldwide. All of those things took place well before 2008 even ended.

Wasn't GaGa kinda local at first? I remember when that whole Christina thing went down at the AMAs and a bunch of dance music lovers were making videos comparing Xtina and GaGa, and all I could think to myself was, "who the f*ck is a GaGa?"

1. There were 3 music videos, and 2 of them were rather low budget.
2. Akon and Colby are her labelmates.
3. Gaga was destined to be an international star. I doubt anyone expected her to break through in the States the way she did.

Did you have a look at the receipts? Only Poker Face & Just Dance were before the end of 2008. LoveGame/Eh Eh where shot back to back in January 09 = CHEAAAAP. LoveGame came out 13 February 2009, Eh Eh around that time too.
They had few expectations and thought to but both (Gaga + Colby) together to make sure they could drop them after contract thingies. The Fame Part 1 was her pure own investment and stuff.

Did Colby have any hits after that? Does Gaga keep in touch when him since her breakthrough?

I'm sure they had some faith in her. Why bother with anything - book, movie, album, whatever - if you don't have faith in it.

I mean they probably didn't expect it to be huge. I'm sure they had faith in her talent

I don't think they did have that much faith in her financially. That's why she was signed to Interscope, Cherrytree, Streamline and Kon Live. No one wanted to take full financial responsibility.
Compared to someone like Ke$ha who is signed only to RCA.

You forgot BDR. Also, if The Fame's initial sales were really that disappointing to the label they wouldn't have invested in 2 more videos in early '09.
In November 2008 I remember browsing the Australian and Canadian iTunes stores and seeing "Poker Face" and its video in the top ten and on Halloween 2008 seeing posters of The Fame plastered all over Northern California. There was definitely a huge promotional campaign going for GaGa.

Well yeah, anyone who works with Dr. Luke = automatic sign of confidence + destined for a hit.

They probably didn't have much faith in her (well, I'm sure they had at least some) because new artists weren't typically selling well outside of digital singles. I'm sure Ke$ha's label looked at the success of Gaga and was confident that she could at least get some hits and a platinum album.

I would like to know. Who knows why she ever worked with him, his verse was unnecessary to the song.
