It serves as an incentive to work hard and do a good job paying attention to the customer.
People who don't leave tips are jerks and deserve crappy service wherever they go for the rest of their lives

!!!
I'd be embarrassed as **** if I didn't leave a decent tip.
And like, I'm not about to be the stingy cheapskate that every waiter talks about after I leave because I didn't tip.

Well since we're paying tips for WAITERS to WAIT how about we pay tips for Walmart Greeters to Greet, and for Janitors to pick up trash.
Like really
Ya'll are trying to use these flawed explanations to give out money to people doing their regular jobs.

Umm isn't that the job they signed up for?
I mean....and the same people trying to point out they give tips because they're struggling are probably the same ones who don't give money to the homeless who have nothing whatsoever.
Paying tips to a WAITER for WAITING is like paying maids tips to clean.
Wtf, it's their job in the first place...
|
DEATH!
Well I think it varies by countries but in the US they signed up for the job because tips are expected thus they agreed to the rock-bottom minimum wage.
Now if you're serving in a high class restaurant or in expensive cities dining then I say the tipping there is overpaid.

Because it is rude to not tip. I work at Chuck E. Cheese's and make $8.25 an hour. Speaking strictly, I should not be tipped as I make above minimum wage.
That being said...
I deal with parties of 25+ people (my highest was 52,) with the majority being children. If you expect me to cut your pizza, pour your drinks, dance for you, cut and serve your cake, get in a mouse costume, and not be disappointed with no tip, then I think that is unreasonable. I never ever being it up and, if the person in charge asks about it, I always explain how I earn minimum wage, but the reluctance to tip is astonishing...nothing is more heartbreaking than seeing that person put their $10 back in their wallet.
If you paid $500 to have this party (My most expensive was $1,200) then I think you can swing me $5 here and there.
Long story short, it is just nice and respectful. People don't realize how difficult it is to be a server.
I am, usually, the game room attendant. Do I expect tips for fixing games? No.
When I am at cash, do I expect tips for ringing? No.
When I bust my balls, bend over backwards, hand-wait on you, and kiss your ass for two hours to make your kid happy, do I expect a tip? Yes.

This proves my point even further.
I'm not about to give extra money to people so they don't complain when I don't have to give them extra money in the first place!
That's greedy expecting every person to have extra money just for you.

WAITERS ONLY MAKE $3 PER HOUR. THAT IS LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE. THEY NEED TIPS.

In Australia the wages are quite decent and therefore tipping isn't as expected as it is in the US.
How expensive is the food in the US if the customer is expected to pay for the waiter's/waitresses wages? I mean, I understand that you are paying for a service etc, but why doesn't the boss/owner pay for that?

Greeters don't have cater to your every request neither do Janitors. Like someone said, they are butlers for a good hour or two, the least you could do is drop off a couple dollars. No one's asking you to pay their rent. It is their job to serve and with that job comes along the benefit of receiving tips, from socially equipped humans.

You said that over and over. If that's the case then nobody would sign up for the job unless their idiots.
SO a world without waiters, all eating places should be buffets, sit your asses down and serve yourself.

Seeing the waiter/waitress wage is sad.
And to answer the question, we do it because it's nice, we're not forced to.

!! It's not like we're asking you to give them 200 dollars every time you go there to eat. Give them 5 bucks, even that'll do something, gosh.

Did waiters not sign up knowing what they were doing? Oh okay.
Ya'll acting like they're slaves and forced to do this stuff.
A tip isn't gonna hurt them, and if you really need a $3 tip that much then consider finding a new job.

Do you really think it's that easy to find a new job? People get turned down applying to work at grocery stores for gods sakes, people literally take what they can get.

No because 99% of people don't sign up for a job where their wage lies on people giving them money off what they're suppose to do.
All tips do is giving more $ to the government by having ya'll take $$ out the pockets and have owners get off with ripping them out minimum wage, and ya'll sitting here trying to brag about it.
