I agree with her tho we have so many white girls in pop that are imo less distinguishable than the black girls. Really makes no sense...

!!!
Notice how they're all mixed racially ambiguous looking as well. More people need to call that out too.

Multimillionaire is a stretch. I doubt she even hit the million mark. Ain't ever seen her on Forbes

Tinashe seems like a really great person overall. I really want her to win. She's intelligent, talented & works her ass off.

Good point, poor examples. All 3 of those girls make radio candy unlike FKA. Radio is obviously going to be nicer to pop candy like Break Free, Shake it Off and All About That Bass than any FKA single.
Zendaya shouldn't be expected to succeed musically because her singing is supbar and she isn't a song writer. Taylor writes, Meghan writes and has a pretty good voice, Ariana sings well. Despite this Zendaya was able to score a platinum single and is working with hitmakers like Timbaland and covering tons of magazines and making tons of headlines based of what? A Disney show and one album over 2 years ago that opened with 7k. She's doing fine, all things considered.
Tinashe's album received critical acclaim and the opportunity to work with hit makers like Max Martin, Mike Will Made it, DJ mustard and get established artists with 10x more fans than her like Schoolboy Q, Chris Brown, ASAP Rocky, Future, R.Kelly to collaborate with her right out the gate. When 'All Hands On Deck' came out it immediately had a big budget video, Dej Loaf/Iggy remixes, Kanye tweeted about it, all the big media sites posted about it and the song couldn't even chart.
She's had a very good push for someone with not only a minuscule fanbase but the complete inability to sell singles/albums. 2 on was #11 on overall radio but like #60 on itunes. Her other songs did well enough of Rhythmic radio yet all hovered around 200-300 on itunes even with promo slots like Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Good Morning America, etc. She had hoards of major media outlets praising her album to the high heavens but opened with 17k. She's hardly the neglected artist her fans try to push her with, the GP just isn't responding to her.

If they're more than even 30% of the largest names in music. Isn't that great?

Yeah but black people created rock and pop music, even hip hop/rap later on, so it was only fair that they would own a great percentage. The peak was the 90s/00s. You have to admit the percentage since then did decrepit.

Yep, Colourism is a huge problem.
Although dark skinned girls still do have a chance, it's a small chance, but it's not entirely impossible. I know it's not the music industry but look at Lupita.
she's a role model for all those dark beautiful girls who wanna make it into the media industry

But their music sucks. That's why.
Not saying she's wrong. There's definitely an imbalance. But she's not failing cause there's "too many black people". She's failing because her music is basic, and she doesn't have great management. If it wasn't for ATRL, I would have no idea who she was. No one is pushing her. Ariana and Taylor had great management. Meghan blew up from straight luck. That doesn't usually happen.
All the major girls, black or white, became mega stars because they promoted themselves. They had machines behind them. There is definitely more of a struggle for artists of color, but it's annoying when someone says "the only reason I'm not big is because there's too many black girls". No. If you were meant to be a star and legitimately trying, you would be. She's not massive because she's not interesting enough, different enough, or promoting enough. No one is gonna hand her stardom. No one is going to say "oh hey Tinashe, we have a black girl opening." and then bam, she blows up. Lol. It doesn't work that way.

This is the reason why I don't think my dearest Normani will cement her status as the Beyoncé of 5H. Everything is against her, the type of music she'll end up releasing will be Urban Pop like Tinashe's and the industry seems to have a thing for white-passing POC and just white female soloists - if you look at the last two girls to have properly broken out (Ariana and Meghan) it's obvious.
It is ironic, ten years ago I could have easily said Mani would be so successful and selling records easily but it seems unlikely that she will at this point. No matter how good her music will be.
There are so many talented female soloists who are struggling to gather radio support e.g Tinashe, Ciara, Sevyn and FKA Twigs.

She's 18, a millionaire, a model, a singer, and has the biggest show on Disney... I call that winning.
Anyway, this is true. She must have forgot to mention Nicki though, so there are 5! Tinashe just needs to be the 6th.

Yeah, I feel like light-skinned privilege has gotten worse in the last 10 years and it really sucks. Not only that but it's hard for any artist period to really solidy their careers currently, there's a lot of what I like to call "filler artists" in the mainstream that are very flash in the pan but are successful and the truly talented ones are done dirty. I'm going off topic here but seriously the music industry needs to be revamped.

have you ever tried listen to tinashe's music to make that judgement? or are you basing your opinion off of 2 On.
Aquarius is a solid r&b debut album and is far from "basic"

It's funny because 20 years ago you had Toni Braxton, Brandy, TLC, En Vogue, Whitney etc. Sharing the spotlight that's like gone today. It's funny.

I stopped reading your essay there. Not when FKA twigs and Tinashe have acclaim and Meg Griffin and Areola Venti don't. Not when "2 On" and "Glass & Patron" **** on Mariahna and Smegan Bodyshamor's entire discographies. Check yourself delusional Alecia stan.
