I'm betting the government will tell local authorities to turn a blind eye to any gay athletes showing their sexuality. Simply because you can imagine the uproar and harm to Russia's reputation if they actually do arrest someone.

The uproar and backlash if they actually arrest somebody who is gay or straight and is suspected.

And this isn't fair. They could use this to give their team a home advantage. They could arrest somebody who is straight because of "suspicion" and risk chances. They trying to set us up for failure.

Usually there is a lot of vocal support from straight people if a company or brand is vocally homophobic, but something like the Olympics is different. A boycott for something like this is essentially useless.

Hopefully Russia keeps it extra cute during the Olympics, and international activists can boycott effectively with Russia's imported products.

Maybe if more people kicked up sand. Yeah it is discouraging...but the Olympics is so massive and planning/preparations were in place for years so I just don't see it as a reality as much as I would LOVE for Russia's smug dictators to feel the wrath of the gheys.

Do you think the US is in a morally good place right now to boycott? TBH I don't think the US gives a **** about the gays and will not boycott the games just for them. Sad truth, and it pisses me off that that is what is likely to go down. Plus, US boycotted Moscow. It might be tension-building with Russia to boycott again. Let's all please keep this in perspective.

1) The Olympic games are planned for and constructed for almost a decade in advance. They are not being relocated six months before.

2) There has been a ton of misinformation in international media about the Russian gay propaganda law. Though it is a horrific policy, it has only been applied to large scale public LGBT events or demonstrations. The police aren't going around beating and arresting random gay people walking down the street. So unless gay athletes organize a gay pride march through the town square, they aren't going to be arrested.

Even though Vancouver hosted three years ago, it is far too late for them organize on such short notice.

Also, given the amount of money Russia and Sochi has already put into building and planning the Olympics the impact of moving the games would be bad.
