Late spring! (I actually bought this album on my birthday.) The sparse arrangement and the catchy melody of this song makes it the clear stand of the album from which it comes, the Features' self-titled fourth album. The lyrics, which are about the new time's technology obsession, can't help but make one think.
I only purchased this song a mere three weeks before the cutoff but it still managed to squirm its way into this countdown. The classic rock-esque (for lack of a better term) BOP is from Zeus' sophomore album Busting Visions.
I guess I was late to a lot of Sia songs this year. Sia and the song itself show a great dynamic range, especially in the outro. The lyrics verge between being uplifting ("You little tree / I'm certain you will grow") and depressing ("This is the first of million broken hearts").
Another Rubblebucket song, Save Charlie was released along with the EP of the same name whilst lead singer Kalmia was undergoing chemotherapy. The lyrics playfully dance aroun with the idea of phone calls and texting in a light-hearted manner. It's also Rubblebucket's first music video since their 2011 album Omega La La.

I only started listening to this song very much, but it's taken me by storm. The song's lyrics are magical and refreshing, the song itself feels like a classic already and the music video conveys a message I think much of ATRL can agree on. Very recommended.
Mariam coos over a rather calm arrangement about knowledge of the world. "We came out of a hole not knowing anything / and into a hole we will be sucked back in". The song almost feels iPod commercial ready, were iPods to take a sudden twist in marketing. Fall entry.
Serene and pleasant on the ears, this Bob Dylan-recalling track is from Foxygen's sophomore. The song is simply easy to like if this is your type of thing. Sparse little jamming from the piano, guitar and organ decorate the second verse. This music video is a mess and we do not speak of it.
This single from Rubblebucket's 2011 album Omega La La is wonderfully basic, sporting only four different chords throughout a 2 bar repeating sequence. The song is incredibly catchy and plain ol' fun. This music video is also a mess and we do not speak of it. ever. please.

A fun little pop rock summer song from Australian band Sticky Fingers (Aussie pride!). Some studio magic improves the arrangement vastly. Standout line: "I killed you so you'd stay". It's amazing how much this song can do with only an A and B section for the majority of the time.
Saying this song is pretty is an understatement. This song has become my go-to sweet little love song. The vocals on this track sound beautifully loving, melodic and gentle and the lyrics are just too perfect. My favorite line: "Kiss me with your mouth open". Actually, scratch that. Every line's my favorite. I don't know why this isn't higher.
This song may be a *slight* mess, but I still love it. This is from Foxygen's EP I mentioned earlier, Take the Kids Off Broadway, which was full of legacy-long immensely complex songs. I'm not even going to bother trying to write out the format for this song but I assure you it sure as hell ain't standard. Spring.
Summer. Another fun, retro bop. More flawless than the song, though, is the video, which is visual candy, not the mention the video came out on my birthday, so, I mean, slay. The hook will get stuck in your head for days on end. My favorite part? "And I wannawannawannawannawannawanna..."

Like the rest of Foxygen's discography, this song is crazy, all over the place and classic rock reminiscent. For whatever reason (?!?!?!?!) this song never got a video, which is a damn shame. I live for the chorus melody, it's the best part of the song by far. Winter entry!
A winter entry, this relaxed nearly-instrumental was declared by US iTunes as the #1 electronic song of all of 2012. Vehl stands for "Voice, Eyes, Hands, Lips", as stated en Francais in the song's lyrics ("Ta voix. Tes yeux. Tes mains. Tes lèvres.").
Don't Go stands out due to its strange mystical arrangement most prominent in the first minute of the song. The video is cute as **** and if you don't smile even a little when you're watching it I don't really know what to call what's wrong with it. tbh. Oh, and the vocals on this are real sweet. Late spring entry.

This song ain't got much too it but it's soooo catchy and irresistable, ugh. I love the guitar? synth? whatever it is on the chorus, it sounds so good. And the positive message is nice too, I guess. Been while since I had one of those on my iPod. Spring entry.
Speaking of catchy, OH MY GOD ASGKLASJGLKSAJGASKLFJ. This song was stuck in my head for days, weeks on end. Kyary's best songs, like this one, are when she brings her fun energy. And after a singular listen to will find yourself singing "Da da da da invadah" over and over again as if it is some Saytunic ritual.
Dat emotional climax at the end of this tho. This song is so fun to just scream along to in the car, or dance around to in your underwear alone in your room. Not to mention that the lyrics, although not containing the most depth, are phrased so well, it's just so perfect ugh. I love the fire/train motifs. Summer entry.
