The nature of the song isn't meant for 'smash success' and that's what so amazing about it
The people like you who expect, or I suppose just assume, that because it's Rihanna it's going to skyrocket to the top of the charts are funny. Rihanna is actually laughing at you considering she just released a folk pop song with a rap legend and one of the biggest musicians of all time and it's one of the freshest tracks she's ever created. The success thereafter is just in addition to the quality of the music.
Random side note: I love now that Rih is 'back', it's time for people to start trying to clock and drag her again (it's cyclical for every pop star when they come back with a new era) yet these birds don't realize that Rih is essentially so unclock/undragable at this point that they really just look so pathetic trying
and the people some of YA'LL stan for? some of them ain't seen an iTunes chart position in this decade, gurl....
That's like actually what I'm saying. 'Only One' wasn't intended to be a hit, it was a sentiment / experience Kanye shared about himself, his life, his daughter, his mother with the world. This song is Rihanna's equivalent because it summarizes the pressures she faces from petty ATRL stans (and Internet birds alike) watching her every chart position as if she can't catch a breath
this song is essentially her telling you to shut the **** up and let her live so she can come back and slay you with her actual music, you just didn't get the memo
