It is when schools start again, after a year of bullying kids come back to school expecting a new leaf and find it as bad as before. Makes sense to me.
But it could also just be that the media picks up on it more around this time.

A better question, how is arresting little Jimmy and charging him with a crime on his record for life because he pushed him on the playground going to improve his life?
You guys need to understand that these are children and they will think as children do. It's very rare that bullying occurs without a parent or teacher being aware of it at some point. The changes in the victim's behavior, bruises, etc. You take it to the school administration/parents, and it's handled.
Once again, at the end of the day, you take your own life, that's on you.

Let's encourage children to bully others by not doing anything about the current bullying problem.

I think you are being incredibly insensitive nor do I think you have a fantastic grasp on the situation. Some people have a predisposition to depression, I don't know if you have ever had or witnessed depression but those people literally are not in control of their own minds, things seem worse than they are and they literally can not cope. It's cases like that which are then antagonized by constant harassment that result in children committing suicide. If a child is too young to drink, drive, look after themselves, live on their own, how can they be responsible for their own lives? If enough people tell a child they would be better of dead enough times, that will become implanted in their heads. Right up to the age of 21 people are incredibly impressionable from a psychological viewpoint.
No, I don't have a PHD in psychology but I majored in it, Psychopathology, Aggression and Child development to be specific so I do actually know what I am talking about,
I don't think anyone wants kids arrested, what they do want is prevention of bullying, schools need to be FORCED, to take it more seriously whether that be an increase in suspensions, detentions or if the problem persists expulsions because clearly sending the victim to the school counselor is not enough. No child should be scared to go to school. Period. And if the problem gets to the stage where bullying plays a large factor in a childs death then the kids responsible need to be held accountable, whether it be a junior correctional facility or mental help for them, I don't know, I'm not going to pretend to know the ins and outs or the capability of the law.

Exactly. There's no increase in suicide due to bullying. The media is just reporting it on it daily now for whatever reason. I hate when they randomly start to give a **** about negative things when all they usually report on are corny celebrities weddings and other useless ********.
Anyway, I really can't with these children taking their lives, but RIP.

I don't know why you're trying to simplify things like this. There are so many factors involving a suicide and each one is different. I don't think a universal law would be the solution, that would mean all cases of bullying are the same, and they are not. They should be viewed independently of one another.
Telling kids to toughen up won't hold up in this age, it won't.

With the cyber age upon of kids are being harassed more than at school. Cell phone numbers get out, e-mail addresses, formspring, facebook, bebo, youtube, tumblr...there is no end to the kind of places kids can torture eachother and to those who say 'then they shouldn't use those' wise up, why should anyone be scared to use a website? You can't completely avoid the internet these days, it is part of daily life unless you are Amish.

You completely missed the point. For whatever reason you're perceiving us as if we're saying "Oh, look at boy, he's stupid and deserved to die". And do you have a Ph.D in Psychology? If not, your opinion is no more credible than ours. Bullies are responsible for the actions they commit, not the victim's suicide itself. Unless somebody is holding a gun to your head telling you to kill yourself, or they'll do it themselves, nobody can force you to kill yourself. I'm always a little more sympathetic when it's a child, but when it's a grown person, I don't even waste my time. You know better.
That's the problem with America nowadays, we're living in a society that raises people to feel sorry themselves. Especially young boys, 50 years ago you would have rarely heard of an 11-year boy killing himself because he was being bullied.
|
I hope you're not making the argument that society was a better place to be in 50 years ago, especially for victims of bullying. Besides, rarely hearing about it didn't mean that it didn't happen (suicide wasn't something that would be reported about on the news back then like it would be today. It was a taboo subject), and it also doesn't mean that kids who don't kill themselves don't find other destructive ways of coping with it or that the pain doesn't eat away at them even when they don't show it.
Too many people seem to think it's that easy for a suicidal person to overcome such thoughts, and that anyone who does it is a coward. No, I don't purport myself to be an expert in psychology, but I know enough not to oversimplify such a complex problem.
And I'm sorry, but if you bully and harass a person to the point that they do end up committing suicide, you are indeed responsible for that outcome. Kids don't just decide to kill themselves just because they feel like it.

I like how bullies are just "children being children" to you, but the victims who take their lives are just wimps who need to tolerate being bullied. Nice.

There are people being raped, beaten, and living on the streets and these little boys are killing themselves because someone pushed them or called them a ***. If their parents would first accept them and teach them that **** happens, they could prevent their children from death so early. If bullies know they can get rid of the things they don't accept by simply saying a few words and taunting them, that is what they will do until they are all dead and gone. Most of these kids are killing themselves because they keep hearing other people are doing it.

Pretty much summed up what I've been thinking myself.
The fact the grandmother was a therapist... a ****ing mess. I said in the thread about Jamey that these therapists need to start being a bit more active with their patients.

I'm so tired of y'all acting like this bullying **** is something new. This let's me know y'all honestly don't really give a **** or keep up with negative situations such as these until it's basically forced down your throats 247. God. Get out your fav's ass for a change and actually pay attention to the news. Maybe you wouldn't be making such a big deal over this since it happens multiple times a day every ****ing day. I hate when gerls on ATRL bandwagon **** and wanna turn into the Justice League Force.
Anyway, all parties are at fault to be honest. The parents, bullies, but especially the people who decide to take their own lives. I honestly have no remorse for children or people who have no kind of mental problems that may affect their decision making to take suicide as a way out of their problems. I doubt these children are going through every possible solution before thinking of suicide. And whoever said the media is glamorizing suicide is right. They glamorize suicide the same way they glamorize this teen mom ********. I've gone through so much at a younger age and dealt with it. Honestly, this generation has it so easy yet their taking their own lives over the silliest things like being called a name. Not talking about this child in particular, but there have been stories like that and it disgusts me.
His grandmother was a therapist for pete's sake. Like really gerl, and you didn't notice any signs?

It's never gonna stop because it's nothing new. It only seems "new" because the media latched on to one incident that got attention from a major pop star. I feel bad for the kid. I really do, but it's weird that child suicide and bullying are only relevant under certain circumstances. I won't get into this little back-and-forth about whose fault is or what should happen to the bullies, however.
