In your own thread, sure. It's not quite SYG-level freedom, but it's much less restricted than regular threads.

As long as your list means something to you, nothing else matters.

There are no rules against it. Your main list should focus on 2012 content, but you're free to include stuff from 2011 if it has significance to you this year.
Guidelines from 2011
1. It's your countdown
You get one thread per year; that's it. No one else gets to vote on your countdown, period. Your thread is all about you.
2. Start with an intro
Use your first post to tell us what you're going to do. Will you list your top songs, singles, videos, albums, artists, concerts, TV shows, movies, video games, whatever? It's all up to you. Let us know first, and get into the actual list later.
3. Don't post all at once
The most important part! You want to post your countdown(s) in installments over the span of about 2 to 3 weeks. For example, if you have one list of 50 songs, post it in daily blocks of 5 or so. The suspense makes things interesting.
4. Use words, pictures
Nobody cares about your list if you don't tell us why you chose what you chose. Describe every item on your list with at least a full sentence. If you add pictures and graphics, that's even better.
5. Actively participate
We encourage you to support each other. Reply with your comments, crazy randomness or anything else to let them know you're reading. You can't just post "7/10" or whatever. Tell them what you liked! Be supportive and have fun.
6. Limited time only
This year, the Best of 2011 forum will be open and fully promoted until Sunday, January 29, 2012. You must finish your entire countdown before that date, because the Best of 2011 forum will close for posting.
