now, with this top 40 albums of 06 list I had to set up a cutoff date. at first it was going to be the end of November, but then so many amazing albums came out then. so I then set up the cutoff date as albums that came out after November 28th, 2006 couldn't make it. now here are some albums that came after the cutoff that have been really amazing:
Ghostface Killah-More Fish
Release Date: December 12th, 2006
my gosh, was Ghost on fire this year or what? after releasing the future classic Fishscale in March, President Carter commissioned Ghost to make another album by the end of the year. so Ghost finished up some songs that were unfinished from the Fishscale sessions, and recorded brand new songs with guests such as Redman, Sheeck Louch, and his group (thats not Wu Tang) Theodore Unit. This album isn't really a full out GFK solo album. it's more of a Theodore Unit preview album, with some new solo GFK thrown in. the songs are amazing. any of these solo GFK songs could fit on Fishscale. GFK also got a great production team like Madlib, Hi-Tek, Mark Ronson, MF DOOM, and some up and coming producers who hold their own. overall for an album that was really made because he had to make an album before the end of the year, it's really ****in good. it proves that no one can stop Ghost right now.
Best Songs as of right now
1.Alex (Stolen Script)
2.Block Rock
3.Street Opera feat. Sun God
Nas-Hip-Hop Is Dead
Release Date: December 19th, 2006(today! pick it up!)
I am so happy that this was a great album, cause for a second I thought Nas would of fumbled. good thing he proved me wrong.while I am disapointed that there is nothing by DJ Premier on here(let alone the whole album entirely produced by him), it's still really awesome. tracks like the standout for me at the moment ,"Hold Down The Block", show off why Nas is so great. and Will.i.am continues his streak as being the HOW THE HELL IS HE SO GOOD AT PRODUCING WHEN HE IS ASS ON THE MIC? producer. of course "Black Republican", the long awaited collabo between Nas and Jay-Z, is ****in epic with sampling from the Godfather II. only other dissapointment I have with it besides no Primo is the fact that this track "White Man's Paper" feat. Damian Marley was slated to be on it, and it is nowhere to be found. it was the track I was most awaiting ~_~. oh well, it's still a ****in great album that everyone should check out.
Best Songs as of right now
1.Hold Down The Block
2.Black Republican feat. Jay-Z
3.TIE! between Still Dreamin' feat. Kanye West and Who Killed it?
another sidelist about local music should be up later tonight.

so, Calgary has a pretty cool music scene. i'm going to showcase three of my favorite local bands here, and also talk about a great thing happening to the city. also in the band's name is a link to their Myspace page.
Local Music
Knucklehead
Calgary's pride and joy Knucklehead have been doing it for over ten years. they are just a really great straight up punk band. I saw these guys open for Rancid in October, and they were ****in amazing. their latest album "The New Black List" is a great punk record that everyone should check out.
Rum Runner
a very great whiskey punk band that are reminisce to Dropkick Murphys. they were formed in 2001, and have been doing great ever since. I reviewed the album up on top for my friend's punk zine.
The Dudes
this band unlike the others aren't punk. they are more indie-ish. their music has appeared in commercials in canada for Rogers, so they are getting more known by the day. this quote about the band is pretty true:
Quote:
"If the Replacements had come from Calgary instead of Minneapolis, had been sober for parts of their early career, and been to a few rodeos, they might have sounded like the Dudes." Vancouver Courier Magazine, July 14th, 2006.

92.9 the X coming to Calgary on New Years Day
this has been a long time coming. the radio scene here is pretty damn sad. the rock station CJAY 92 has been here since 77, and that is supposed to be "the new rock" station. too bad those "new rock" songs are from like 5-6 months ago. so the fact that an alternative station is FINALLY coming to Calgary just makes me ecstatic. also great is how they are having a launch concert with Hot Hot Heat, Evans Blue, and the already mentioned Dudes. i'll be going to the concert, and it'll be a blast to open up the new year by saying hello to the best thing to happen to Calgary radio in a long ****in time.
so yeah. I suggest you all check the bands listed. and I suggest you all check out your own local music scene. you might find some great stuff there you never knew existed.
so, yeah. maybe another sidelist tomorrow, and possibly Part 5.

since I have sidelists for days, HERE's ANOTHER!
Top 3 Concerts Of The Year
3.Bad Religion/Dropkick Murphys
Openers:Comeback Kid and **** 45
September 28th, 2006
that poster isn't the show I went to, but that poster rules too much not to post.
whoever's idea was to get these two bands to go on an Double Bill tour is a genius. **** 45 were very awesome, even though hardly anyone was there, and the people that were there were just standing around ~_~. Comeback Kid I don't care for at all, so that was a bathroom break. Dropkick Murphys were just as great as you expect them to be. they did so many great songs, and ending it off with "Kiss Me I'm **** Faced" was a massive singalong. Bad Religion then played all the classics that you expect them to play, and Greg Graffin's interaction with the crowd was top notch. even at one point having this gigantic mug of Tim Horton's coffee which then lead to crazy cheers. overall, just a great double bill show that may never happen again, but i'm glad I was there.
2.Guns N Roses
December 6th, 2006
Openers: Sebastian Bach, Helmet, Suicide Girls
yes, it isn't the original lineup, but they still killed it just if it were. Suicide Girls, I must say, were surprisingly very disapointing. They make it out like they show a lot, but all it is just pasties. and it went on for too long of the same ****. Helmet weren't very great either. it was just 40 minutes of constant noise of what seemed like the same song over and over again. Sebastian Bach's energy level was off the charts. he said some hilariously stupid things that made me laugh.
GNR didn't get on the stage till Midnight, but it was worth it. they played nearly the entire Appetite For Destruction album, as well as almost all of their singles. they also played 4 new songs which, for the most part, sounded very promising. they even got Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys on stage to all sing "Liquor and *****s" which was hilarious. overall, the openers weren't the greatest but GNR all but made up for it with a 2+ hour set that went till 2:30 AM.
1.Rancid
October 1st, 2006
Openers: The Aquabats, Knucklehead
this honestly, had to be the best live show i've ever seen. and i've seen U2, and Metallica. not only was Rancid ****in unbelievable, but both openers were top notch, and that doesn't happen very often.
Knucklehead, as said in the Local Music post, killed it. they had some diehard fans there singing along to every word. the Aquabats were just some crazy ****. If they ever come to your town, you must go. it'll be unlike anything you've seen. they fight a villainous Lobster, have hilarious commercials in between, say hilarious things, and just a very fun show. then Rancid came out. they knocked it out of the ****in park. did so many classic songs of theirs, playing at least one song from each album. with around 8 being from "...And Out Come The Wolves". it was the show that turned from a fan to a huge fan of the band.
as I said, all three of those performances together made for probably the best concert experiance i've ever been to.
Part 5 WILL! be up tomorrow. if not, then everyone can take my thread hostage.

Part 5
15.Red Hot Chili Peppers-Stadium Arcadium
now this is a difficult album to rate. I absolutely love it, and think quite a lot of it is some of RHCP's strongest material in a long while. then why is it so low? the only real reason I could give is that it's too much music. at over 2 hours, it's overwhelming to listen to. however, none of the songs are bad in the slightest, which is odd for a double disc. It features some of RHCP's most beautiful slow songs, and some of their heaviest stuff in a long time. the real star of this album is John Frusciante. The person who I would say is the greatest guitar player around today, goes completely nuts and delievers the energy and emotion into his guitar work that is usually only seen at the live shows. The first time I could say that has ever happened on an RHCP album. Flea's bass work is also top notch
RHCP, along with U2, was one of the first bands I got into when I started to really get into music, so it's always nice to see them release some new stuff, especially when it's as good as this.
Best Songs
1.Stadium Arcadium
2.Torture Me
3.She's Only 18
14.The Flaming Lips-At War With The Mystics
at the beginning of the year this was my favorite album of the year. now it's at 14. not because I grew tired of it, just because this year has been insanely competitive. this is a perfect album to just daydream to, and just pretend you are floating to the music (that sounded very stonerish). Flaming Lips never make a bad album, and this one certainly is no exception.
Best Songs
1.Free Radicals
2.The W.A.N.D.
3.It Overtakes Me/The Stars Are So Big, I Am So Small... Do I Stand A Chance?
13.Bob Dylan-Modern Times
I really think some critics went a bit crazy with this. yes it's Dylan, and he's one of the greatest artists to ever live, but it's just not this huge revolutionary album for him. however, this album is still a very great listen. "Workingman's Blues #2" especially is such a great ****in song, and shows Dylan isn't losing it. a funny part of this album is when Dylan name checks Alicia Keys in the opening track "Thunder On The Mountain". seems so odd and hilarious for him to mention her.
Best Songs
1.Workingman's Blues #2
2.Ain't Talkin'
3.Thunder On The Mountain
12.Neil Young-Living With War
amen, Neil. amen.
Best Songs
1.Let's Impeach The President
2.After The Garden
3.Shock and Awe
11.Rhymefest-Blue Collar
the other debut album from a Chicago rapper in 06 got barely any of the attention it truly deserves. Rhymefest who helped co-write Kanye West's Grammy winning song "Jesus Walks", is just such a great talent. apparently he had the choice to sign with Kanye's GOOD music label or Mark Ronson's Allido Records, and ended up choosing Ronson's label. sadly, business wise I don't think that was the greatest idea. as great a producer as Ronson is, Kanye's GOOD Music is just an on fire label and he would of made a great addition to it.
the album is really great. it includes production from Ronson, Just Blaze, Kanye West, No I.D. , and more. a highlight of the album is "Devil's Pie" which has Ronson chopping the Strokes' "Someday", and makes it somehow work. Fest has so many great verses, but this one, from "Devil's Pie", is one of my favorites.
Quote:
"I know I'm ahead of my time but I'm behind on my rent
Askin Kanye for money just to pay on my gas bill
He asked me for it back, ***** brush up on your math skills
Nothin plus zip equals zero; he couldn't relate
That ***** ain't been broke since "H to the Izzo"
|
so, I suggest anyone who likes hip-hop that is different to please check out "Blue Collar". it's such an outstanding album, and the fact that not many people heard it just depresses me.
Best Songs
1.Devil's Pie
2.Dynamite (Going Postal)
3.Build Me Up feat. O.D.B.
there's part 5. i'll post some sidelists before I get into the top 10.
