Right now she's clearly focused on getting easy hits aka short-term.She's basically trying to be everything and it gives me good laugh. She's trying(way too hard) to be/pull off some weird dangerous type of artist using cheap shock tactics but at the same time you see her releasing song that sounds like Ke$ha's Dr.Luke leftover that could be easily sung by Selena Gomez.
Girl I mean...that ain't gonna cut it.

People have always been so quick to label Nicki as a full-blown pop act ever since Super Bass succeeded, so Im not surprised they're still doing it now after she JUST performed a hip-hop song on the grammy stage of all stages (nevermind the horrible performance) This song is generic as hell, yes, and unfortunate, yes, but thats not to say she's stopped with her hip-hop. Lets all wait till RR.

This is so true. God, she needs to wake up and realize that she's a RAPPER, not a POP ARTIST. Bye to that.

I just feel as though Nicki wants to be taken seriously as female MC, but isn't raising the bar on her music or technique. Forget about the pop direction, because it is more than that, but a moronic song like Stupid Hoe is even further proof. Like really Nicki? She's talented and intelligent, but stuck on the same loop.
As much as she is getting compared to Gaga, Nicki is failing in some aspect. For one, Gaga at least went to another extreme...and even though some didn't want her to, at least she evolved so that her talk could match her walk. Nicki's has to do the same. I'll be rooting for her when she does!

I agree..it feels like she's trying to become something she's not. Can she even be labeled as a rapper now?
I also find it so ironic how upset she was when she called "the black lady gaga" by billboard a few years ago, look at her now.

The first page of this thread has FLAWLESS posts.
Starships is so generic. I was uninterested after 20 seconds.

And I don't think it's bad for some of her songs to be a bit poppier. She's still gonna have a lot of rap songs on her album, it's not like her new album is a full on pop record

I agree completely. Nicki's talent is not even being seen because she is doing all of the characters and trying too hard to be like the Lady Gaga of the rap world.

Vulture has also SLAMMED Nicki.
Quote:
The Legend of "Super Bass," for the uninitiated, goes a little something like this: Nicki Minaj releases the disappointing Pink Friday in late 2010 and buries the bubbly "boom ba doom boom" track as an iTunes Extra.
A few months later, Taylor Swift goes on an L.A. radio station and raps a verse. A few months after that, someone on Nicki's team wises up to the crossover potential, convinces her to release "Super Bass" as a single, and sets her up on a friend date with Taylor Swift.
Soon small British children are on Ellen performing the song in tutus, and Nicki is up for Best New Artist at the Grammys.
The point here is that Minaj stumbled into that massive "Super Bass" success — she either didn't realize she had a hit on her hands, or she didn't want to build a mainstream pop career.
This second alternative doesn't hold much water when you consider the Barbie persona, the Madonna alliance, and the Gaga wigs.
Clearly, Nicki Minaj wants to be a giant star. But the early releases off her upcoming album suggested that "Super Bass" might not be an isolated incident; instead of leading with the giant chorus, she dropped hookless, vaguely misogynistic, not-that-great tracks like "Stupid Hoe" and "Roman in Moscow."
(Plus that Grammys performance — faux controversy aside, Minaj wasted a major opportunity to debut an actually catchy song.)
In this light, "Starships," the latest single off Pink Friday: Roman Returns, is actually a little bit promising.
It has none of the "Super Bass" magic, and it's mostly a mess, like what would happen if you put LMFAO, Britney Spears's "Till the World Ends," Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night," and a robot in a blender.
But there's a definable structure and lyrics that will not have to be bleeped from beginning to end on radio. You can totally dance to that part about touching the sky! (She even tells you how: hands up.)
Most important, it's a sign that Nicki has finally realized she needs that radio hit as much as anyone else. "Starships" doesn't deserve to be that hit! But: Congrats, Team "Super Bass" — if this keeps up, you might just get another jam after all.

Damn.

I actually don't completely understand all the backlash Nicki is getting.

A bit melodramatic on your part.

She deserves it in part for:
1. Being desperate for attention at the Grammy's (I attribute that more to her Grammy red-carpet entrance than I do the performance)
2. Releasing a generic dance song when she never had to resort to such a thing
3. Managing her releases very messily and resorting to releasing a proper single that was pop before a proper single that was urban.
Still, some of these other comments are unwarranted and are being fueled by the number of people who have had a history with disliking nicki

I can understand the sell-out part, but I don't understand the hate for her antics. She's doing what Gaga's been doing for years and she's the first one who is actually doing it right (unlike Katy, K$ et al, she gets a reaction out of people, CLEARLY). You could say she was making fun of the Grammy red carpet even if she looked like an idiot. I thought it was funny, much like Gaga's egg.
I also thought the performance was hilarious... She's pure camp.

The best thing this article did was to say Minaj should look to Eminem for guidance. And really, I'm hoping RR turns out to be like an Eminem era, where he releases a (pretty terrible) pop single to get a radio hit then the album is full of real rap. I doubt that's going to happen with Minaj, but that's the only thing I could hope for. She really needs to ditch Weezy and start associating with Kanye and Jay.
