If you have an equation like (x-3)(x-6)=0, one of either (x-3) or (x-6) must equal 0, otherwise the equation wouldn't be true. So x can be either 3 or 6, because if x is 3 then (x-3) equals 0, and if x is 6 then (x-6) equals 0, and those are the two solutions to the equation.

we normally call exams during term time to monitor progress 'tests' and exams are the big ones at the end of the year

Yeah, we just call them all tests except for the big ones at the end of a semester, course, or school year, which are called finals (and conveniently pop up two weeks from now for me).

How does that not make sense to you it's a simple linear equation, it's already factored and must follow the zero factor rule because the product is zero. The equation has to be quadratic equals zero.

You should be able to look at it and instantly know x = 3,6.

Maybe it's in the way he is wording his explanation that is throwing you off.

our equation is
(x-3)(x-6) = 0

1) Let x=3 (so everywhere you see an x, replace it with 3)
(3-3)(3-6)
(0)(-3)
=0

so that's true

2) This time, try x=6
(6-3)(6-6)
(3)(0)
=0

also true. So our two solutions where x=3 or x=6 satisfy our equation. That's called the Null Factor Law (at least where I'm from)

The exact definitions I don't have in my head I would have to google them but for example a product is the result of multiplying two or more numbers. I generally do all this math in my head without even thinking of what kind of math it is when I am working. So I have reach back to remember all the terminology myself when explaining stuff. That's why I hate explaining stuff. I'm not good at it.

6 (factor) x 2 (factor) = 12 (product)

6 (multiplier) x 2 (multiplicand) = 12 (product)
