The single release dates were pretty awful. The album should have come out closer to when the first single dropped.

Judas flopping, the rush-release of TEOG and, of course, all the hype that caused the front-loaded sales.
The album/era had no longevity because of that.

1. Too much Hype
This set her up to fail, it provided great sales at the begining but once ppl heard it didnīt live up to expectations, no one cared how good it really was - or gave it a chance really. All they cared about was that it wasnīt as good as ppl hoped.. edit - ok maybe some of the outfits should have been more controlled too lol
2. Too much Gaga power
this does not at all refer to the music produced or even really the outfits and outings, but mainly the music videos. although I personally like some of the MV this era more than last, many ppl just donīt like them specifically because Gaga produced it
3. The Music
Its not at all bad music - in fact for me it is the best album of the decade - many ppl were expecting a bad romance and a poker face album, not some experimentalish women and gay empowering album.
4. The Single Choices
Born this Way did an amazing job - perhaps because of the hype - but she really needed another dance track after that without a controversial topic, meaning probably MTN, followed up by TEOG and then she could take another risk whether that be Judas, Y and i or Shiza and then close up the era with another one of those 3 if the first did well and if not with Hair,
|
The decade's just begun.

Everything pretty much went wrong after Judas was released. It only lasted for like 3 weeks and was replaced by The Edge of Glory. On top of that you had Hair being released, and radio stations had no idea wtf her single was.
You and I turned out to be a lucky success. After that the era was pretty much over.
The era was messily planned, the only stand-outs are BTW, TEOG & You and I.

Yeah, and the promotional singles. Some people were confused and thought she'd release a new single every week.

You and I was the best thing that came out of this era, by far.

but she slightly tarnished it with Jo Calderone, she should have done a country monster image during that era

From the moment she performed it on GMA, it became my favorite song by her.
People laughed at me when I said it was going to do 1904 times better than MTN.

The era could probably have gone better if the singles were in this order:
Born This Way, Marry The Night, NO PROMO SINGLES, The Edge of Glory (a few weeks after album drops), You and I (August), end with Heavy Metal Lover or Hair.

I think the music just didn't connect with the masses because she drifted too far away from the sound the general public and her fans grew to love. But I love that she took a risk. (which is more than can be said for all of her peers) She made a album that she wanted to make. It's not going to see the same success as TFM but it's still sold really well. I do think the 99 cent deal turned many off as well because it seemed desperate.
Her next album is going to be massive though. She isn't going anywhere no time soon.

I think the one thing that we can all agree upon is that the new album will be an important one to see what she's going to do with her future.

OVERHYPE.
The album of the decade thing was said to fans at a concert (This is why I somewhat think that people who didn't like her before using that argument shouldn't bring it up.)
I would be lying if I said that she hadn't made some OTT comments. Also,Gaga's last 3 singles were either rushed,or not radio friendly (in my eyes)
Also, some of my fellow monsters' behavior better NOT ruin Gaga's hype come next album...

The 1st mistake she made was releasing "Born This Way" as the 1st single.
"Marry the Night" was intended to be 1st and it should've been.
