What: Rattlesnake
Why: I went with Rattlesnake because I think it's a bit underrated. I listen to it less now than when the album came out, but I still like it a lot. The frantic guitar riffs with Annie's howling and worried lyrics of a rattlesnake potentially killing her as she strips in the desert. The dirty guitar solo towards the end is pretty great too.
Also: Digital Witness (how Love Giant was supposed to sound), Birth in Reverse, Prince Johnny, and Bring Me Your Loves



Who: Stromae
What: Meltdown (feat. Abuncha Peeps)
Why: I thought this track was a standout from the Mockingjay Pt. 1 soundtrack. I don't really have much to say about it, I just kinda like it.

Who: Sylvan Esso
What: Coffee
Why: I was actually introduced to her from Hey Mami which I didn't like until I got into her whole album. Coffee was what lured me in. The song, and her voice especially, is really pretty. She doesn't really rely on backing vocals or anything for pretty much the whole song and its simplicity is what draws you in.

I think most people got caught up in what they thought it should've sounded like instead of taking in what was actually delivered, which I can understand. That kind of collaboration promises a lot without ever actually promising anything.

Who: Taylor Swift
What: Shake It Off
Why: I don't listen to Taylor Swift outside of singles on the radio, but I wanted to include her on my list because she's doing a great job in all-pop territory! I chose this over Blank Space because I just personally prefer it. It's really catchy, fun, has great use of horns, and are exactly what Taylor should have done in this stage in her career, which she did. The spoken-word section is kinda ehh but it's fun to just ramble it and pretend to know it.
Also: Blank Space and Style (the only songs I know from her new album sorry lol)



Who: Tensnake
What: Love Sublime (feat. Nile Rogers and Fiora)
Why: I have no idea how I found this guy, but anything with Nile as a part of it is awesome. This Fiora chick has a pretty cool voice too. The song is really funky and Fiora sounds pretty husky and sexy on the verses of the song.
Also: Good Enough to Keep, another one with Nile and Fiora



Who: Todd Terje
What: Alfonso Muskedunder
Why: I think this was most people's favorite from the album. It's really organic and a bit of a mix of jazz stylings as well as some electronic music. It's paired with some scatting and "hey!"s in the song, multiple fun instruments in the song, and actually a key change in the last 30 seconds of the song. Even if you aren't a fan of longer songs and stuff (his album has a lot of "long" songs) this song would surely win anyone over.

What: Talking Body
Why: This is a pretty sexy song. I like how the swearing in the "**** for life" in the chorus is so casual and that's the phrase she went with for intercourse. I think Tove sounds pretty good on the sad songs about how to cope with pain, but this song about just lusting over your crush works pretty well for the girl.

What: Water Fountain
Why: This was really the only song from the album that stuck with me, which was disappointing since the previous album was pretty fantastic. Idk it all felt too nursery-rhymey. Water Fountain is pretty mellow and I think the story-telling in this song is pretty clever. That bass in the song is really groovy too.
Also: I'd recommend checking out her album from 2011.



Who: Vacationer
What: In the Grass
Why: These guys were a cool little find towards the end of the year. The chorus in this track is snappy and because the whole album has a kind of relaxed and vacation-on-an-island feel to it, it uses some tropical instruments. I like the bridge a lot.

Who: Vanilla
What: Wish You Were Here
Why: The last musician on my list is yet another Bandcamp find. This guy is one of those hip-hop artists without the rap or any vocals, except for sampling. I like it a lot in this song because the sampling is pretty cool and while it gets a little repetitive, I think it's cool when it slows down as if the song is ending and then restarts.
