I am MADLY in love with Vanessa Carltons latest single "Hands On Me" and the video too. I got the album for christmas, and it needs some reviews on this site! So here is mine.
Nolita Fairytale: First single as you know. Not much need for explaining as im sure you have all heard it and loved it.
Hands On Me: One of my favorites, the second single. It's a faster song, the constant "hey" (I believe is what she says, or "okay") is pure genius, and the beginning of the song where she says "2, 3" adds a certain indie-ish feel to the song. But the chorus is the true gem of the song, the strings, drums, and piano are in full effect adding so much feeling to the song. The last chorus where the choir of voices comes in adds another sexy and non-repetitive effect to the song. Perfect is all that can be said.
Spring Street: "Na na na na na" it begins with a heavy drum and guitar in it. "I was headed down to spring street, with a suitcase in my hands, filled with love and life and grand illusion" Vanessa croons in her signature husky but wonderfully girlish voice she eventually heads into a wonderful chorus filled with "na na na na's" in it, and these arent those kiddy "na's" if you know what I mean, they actually a wonderful maturity to the song. Between these "na's" Vanessa inserts a word or two such as "walk on", or "your alright". During the last chorus, Vanessa belts out the last couple of words, and the sudden ending of this song leaves a great lasting effect on you.
My Best: A very up and happy song. This track see's Vanessa in a raw state, minimal musical interferance through the verse, which is perfect actually. But soon the chorus comes in which a harmony of musical instruments enters the sound, the chrous is very fast, you wont get her words well without the booklet (at least I didnt) but its great never the less. Her harmonizing "mmmmm mmmm mmmm" in this song is astounding.
Come Undone: This song is minimal. The minimalism in the track ultimately helps it because it showcases her vocals. Its a short song, not much to say but its very good. So good in fact that I can see it as a single.
The One ft. Stevie Nicks: I went to this song feeling reluctant only because I dont like Stevie Nicks at all. But come to find out, its a standout track. Their vocals during the chorus only compliment each other. "I see you now at the show, 7th in the 7th row"..."You'll always be my golden boy, and im the summeR girl that you enjoy" they sing with ultimate compatibility. Overall, I could see this as a single someday.
Heroes & Thieves: HIGHLIGHT TRACK right here! This song is great. Of course this is the title track of the album, and it lives up to it. The song blends incredibly creative lyrical power with wonderful vocals and great composing from the instruments. "Heroes and thieves at my door, I cant seem to tell them apart anymore" Vanessa sings over the wonderful arrangement. This is truly a great song.
This Time: "Everybody burns, and when it starts to hurt, I cry"...This song is very heartfelt. It's not a highlight overall, but the lyrics make you want to listen to this song, if it werent for the lyrics, it'd be forgettable. Its a definite grower.
Fools Like Me: This song starts with a heavy drum/guitar basis. The song is a great one. I happen to love the chorus. Vanessa sings with such clarity and sureness, she never pushes herself over the edge vocal wise and her vocal satisfaction is shown in this song. Very good once again.
Home: SIMPLY AMAZING SONG HERE! This song is just beautiful. Vanessa really showcases her piano skill in it. But dont start thinking this song is strictly piano, no, this song has about every instrument needed to make it perfect. The song is overall uplifting, "the touch of your hands, and an honest embrace. For where I lay its you I keep this changing world I fall asleep, with you all I know is, I'm coming home, coming home" Vanessa sings during the last chorus where the drums come back in a storming rampage that gives so much feeling to the words and song overall. The real surprise comes at the end of this part, you think the songs over, but it comes back for a fully intrumental part this part, Vanessa shows her TRUE piano skills. This is the best song on the album.
More than This: After the genius that is "Home" this song can be forgotten. But it is very good actually. This is another, "lyrics save the song" type of track, never the less, its very beautiful.
Overall rating: 9/10
Comments: Vanessa's best album by far, and one of the years best of course. Its heartfelt, romantic, dramatic, uplifting, provacative, and just 100% perfect. The overall CD design is great, the booklet features the words to every song, and is designed perfectly with wonderful pictures.
