It doesn't work like that -- the categories for the Grammys are "Best ___[genre here]___ song/album/performance" and NOT "Best ___[genre here]___ song/album/performance by a ___[genre here]___ singer." It's supposed to be based on what is submitted and not what the person submitting typically sings.

wish r&b/rap/hip hop would be less welcoming letting others explore the genres because the open arms attitude is not reciprocated, nether by fans or the gatekeepers of the genres (their radio, publications, etc).

Either way it's the best song on the album & more authentically country than anything on the radio now (including Carrie).

By this logic Taylor needs to return her pop category awards since she only recently became pop.

Songs that aren't submitted are STILL considered and end up nominated anyway, just like the committee can move submissions into whatever category they see fit they can too submit and nominate ones work.

Okay, this makes more sense. When I read the article I figured it'd be that they submitted it but the committee rejected the submission, so it wasn't on the list that Grammy voters got. Which to be honest I can totally see happening (regardless of whether it was racism or the country committee being overly zealous of its field).
