How many comebacks does she need before she stops giving "this is very experimental and might tank on Billboard" pep talk before the tracklisting is even out?

there's no limit, but the budget for each successive album decreases. ala hedging bets.
the reverse is true after a huge era (ala Gaga's "The Fame" and Rihanna's GGGB)
Most artists do not recover from two consecutive flop eras....in fact I can't think of anyone other than Mariah (to the degree she did, basically re-peaking).
I guess JLo did it as well but her album still sold poorly.
I don't like Xtina but I want her around. Your Body needs to be a hit so she can open her album in the top 10 and have 2 more singles. She better not release a ballad as second single though. I'll be through the door as soon as the piano note hits.

J Lo needed idol to push through for a bigger budget. I mean, before she signed with idol, her songs were leaking left and right--the most obvious signs of an artist that doesn't have strong label support/confidence

That would be the first time since her debut that her 2nd single wasn't a ballad. I would be here for it though. Change it up a little bit. Even though her ballads are usually her best.

I think it's one thing for her to say "it's ahead of its time" in regards to her previous work (Bionic) and to say the same for Lotus. Either way it rings a bit hollow coming from her, but it at least seems a bit less delusional to say that her upcoming work will be true to herself as opposed to just saying in retrospect that Bionic's failure was because the music was just over our heads.
