HOT ZV | 2013: #60-56
And here we have another absolutely amazing track from Neon Trees. I totally adore the intro to the song, it's so oddly reminiscent of the 80's. Well really the whole song comes off that way. This song really is such an anthem though, the chorus is just magical. The verses are so calm and have this great sense of yearning. His voice is just magic with this production. The lyrics are really damn good too. Like wow, this song hits the mark on all fronts. The bridge is great, although probably the weakest part of the song. I'm surprised this didn't peak higher, but it garnered a lot of chart points with a good solid chart run; so good enough.
King Stromae pretty much dominated the year with his album, and this is one of the biggest songs from it. It's peak in 2013 is #11 as listed, but in the first week of 2014 it's already gotten a new peak of #8. This track wasn't one of my favourites when I first listened to the album, but it has just continually grown on me, and I really have come to appreciate it for its greatness. The video is absolutely amazing as well, although I do love the 'lesson' video he did for it on the water where he introduced the character. The production is likely what held me at bay at first; Stromae himself sounds amazing on this and the lyrics are just marvelous. But the production took some time to really get me hooked.
Okay, when I first heard this song I totally thought it was completely stupid and hated the way he sang it. Then it was randomly stuck in my head. Then I just had to get it, and yeah I totally love this track. Oddly enough, I actually completely adore the way he sings this song now. The production is good and makes for a solid upbeat country hit. Really that first verse just gets me every time, it's so so good and irresistible. Definitely a huge country jam that got a solid peak and had good longevity on my chart.
God dammit Ke$ha could you have timed your album any worse last year? This song was a huge hit for me, but of course it had it's first five strong weeks (including its week at #1) sliced into 2012. This had great longevity, allowing this to do this well this year. Last year it placed at #90 on the 2012 year-end chart. This is my favourite song from the album, it's so perfect. Easily some of Ke$ha's best verse, and amazing chorus, and that bridge. Really, that bridge back and forth totally gives me life in every way. It sounds so natural, so perfect. This would have been an amazing single for the era, it's classic Ke$ha while sounding distinct and sincere. What a perfect switch-up; so fresh.
Yet another song that had its run split between years. This song however did score its #1 week during 2013 though, alas it had a lot of weeks in 2012 where it placed at #105 on that year-end chart. I totally hate everything this song stands for with the whole Rihanna/Chris Brown fiasco. But it's just way too catchy, just like that flawless Birthday Cake collaboration. But I definitely take a 'Stop the drama. Start the music.' approach, and since I like the song I don't let their personal lives get in the way of me enjoying this song. They both sound hot on this, and damn those strings just make this so groovy. Damn their vocals are really fire here.
