The pop/reggae group rules for a third week with 'Rude,' while Sia scores her first top 10 as a lead artist with 'Chandelier.'
MAGIC!'s "Rude" reigns atop the Billboard Hot 100 for a third week, while Sia notches her first top 10 as a lead artist with the advance of "Chandelier."
"Wow! I cannot believe this experiment worked," Sia says of her latest achievement, a tongue-in-cheek nod to her trademark avoidance of the spotlight when promoting her music. (For details, read on.)
It's Wednesday, so time to shine a light on the numbers behind the latest Hot 100's top 10.
"Rude" maintains its hold atop the Hot 100 despite leading only the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart, which it rules for a third week (3.3 million on-demand streams, down 4 percent, according to Nielsen BDS). Still, its sales, airplay and overall streaming activity are strong enough to keep it No. 1 on the Hot 100. It dips 1-2 after three weeks atop Digital Songs with 154,000 downloads sold (down 21 percent) in the week ending July 27, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It posts a third week at its No. 2 highpoints on both Radio Songs (164 million all-format audience impressions, up 3 percent) and Streaming Songs (9 million U.S. streams, down 5 percent).
As previously reported, "Rude" takes over atop the Pop Songs airplay chart and leads Adult Pop Songs for a second week.
Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, ranks at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for a third week after spending seven weeks at No. 1. Still, it leads Streaming Songs for an 11th week (10.1 million, down 18 percent). The song ties Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" for the second-longest command since Streaming Songs launched early last year; Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" holds the mark with 13 weeks at No. 1. "Fancy" drops 3-4 on Digital Songs (which it led for four weeks), down by 21 percent to 123,000, while holding at No. 5 on Radio Songs (117 million, down 6 percent); it topped the chart for three weeks.
"Fancy" crowns Hot Rap Songs for a 15th week and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a 10th frame, while dominating the Songs of the Summer chart for a ninth week, continuing as the only song that's led the seasonal tally since it made its annual return after Memorial Day.
Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" logs a second week at No. 3 on the Hot 100, its highest rank so far, adding top Airplay Gainer honors for a third consecutive week (and for the fourth time in five weeks). The ballad spends a second week at its No. 3 high on Radio Songs with a 9 percent gain to 152 million; dips 2-3 on Digital Songs, which it led for two weeks (144,000, down 12 percent); and bullets for a second week at its No. 5 peak to date on Streaming Songs (6.3 million, up 7 percent).
Nico & Vinz's "Am I Wrong" returns to its top Hot 100 rank, rebounding 5-4. It dominates Radio Songs for a fourth week with 165 million, essentially even with last week's total. (The song's four-week rule is the longest by a duo since OutKast's "Hey Ya!" spent nine weeks at No. 1 in 2003-04.) "Wrong" rebounds 8-5 on Digital Songs (114,000, up 18 percent), aided by the pair's performances on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on July 21 and ABC's Good Morning America the next day. On Streaming Songs, it rebounds 12-11 (4.6 million, down 1 percent).
Could either Smith's "Stay" or Nico & Vinz's "Wrong" dethrone MAGIC!'s "Rude" atop the Hot 100? While "Rude" decreases by 7 percent in overall chart points and "Stay" and "Wrong" gain by 1 and 4 percent, respectively, "Rude" leads the songs by a comfortable 16 and 30 percent, respectively. (It boasts a 15 percent margin over "Fancy"; last week, the difference between the two was 6 percent.)
Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj Combine on 'Bang Bang': Listen
Ariana Grande's "Problem," featuring Azalea, rounds out the Hot 100's top five (4-5) after peaking at No. 2 for five weeks. (She also holds at No. 21 with follow-up "Break Free," featuring Zedd). Looking ahead to next week, Grande should make a splashy debut as one-third of "Bang Bang," with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj. The song remains at No. 1 in the iTunes' Store following its release on Tuesday (July 29) and has already crowned the real-time Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart.
Maroon 5's "Maps" reaches a new Hot 100 peak so far (7-6), fueled by a 6 percent gain to 76 million in airplay, while Disclosure's "Latch," featuring Smith, pushes 9-7 and tops the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a second week.
John Legend's former three-week Hot 100 No. 1 "All of Me" backtracks 6-8. As it spends a 23rd week in the top 10, it passes two other former No. 1s for the most weeks totaled in the top tier in 2014: Pharrell Williams' "Happy" and Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, each spent 22 weeks in the top 10.
And … back to Sia. The pop singer/songwriter scores the week's lone new Hot 100 top 10, as "Chandelier" rises 11-9. The lead single from her first No. 1 album, 1000 Forms of Fear, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 two weeks ago, holds at No. 7 on Streaming Songs (5.3 million, up 1 percent), slides 10-14 on Digital Songs (79,000, down 4 percent) and charges 45-35 on Radio Songs (37 million, up 18 percent).
"Chandelier" marks Sia's first Hot 100 top 10 as a lead artist after notching two in 2012 in featured roles: David Guetta's "Titanium" (No. 7) and Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" (No. 5). While she's co-written all three of her top 10s as an artist, Sia has tallied two additional top 10s for other acts, also in 2012: Ne-Yo's "Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself)" (No. 6) and Rihanna's "Diamonds" (No. 1, three weeks). (She made perhaps her most notable early breakthrough back in 2005 when her song "Breathe Me" accompanied the touching last scene of the finale of HBO's Six Feet Under.)
For the notoriously camera-shy Sia, who didn't show her face in TV performances of "Chandelier" leading up to the new album's release and didn't pose for traditional photo shoots (similar to how she appeared with her face obscured by a paper bag on the cover of Billboard last year), parent label RCA Records (also home to MAGIC!) is especially satisfied. "For Sia to be celebrating her first Hot 100 top 10 on her own is gratifying on so many levels," RCA GM/executive VP Joe Riccitelli says. "The best part is that she accomplished this her way and we were able to execute her plan."
Calvin Harris' "Summer," which peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100, keeps at No. 10.
Just outside the Hot 100's top 10, Jason Aldean blasts in with "Burnin' It Down," which starts with 184,000 downloads sold. It debuts atop Digital Songs, where it's his first No. 1, and rockets 42-1 on Hot Country Songs. The track, which previews Aldean's upcoming sixth studio album, ties 2012's "Take a Little Ride" for his highest Hot 100 entrance. He's scored one top 10: "Dirt Road Anthem," which reached No. 7 in 2011.
