I could so go off on a tangent about why reducing poverty to an individual issue and not a structural, societal issue is flawed. It's a very American way of thinking, and while I understand and often perpetuate these values of independence and self-reliance, there's so much more to it than that. I know you're not American, but the US has one of the highest poverty rates of all industrialized nations for a reason.
