Find a pre-made routine first of all and stick to it for a few months. There are plenty floating around on the net.
A little bit of protein doesn't hurt, but just make sure that you're training hard and eating right to make the most of it. It's only a supplement after all.
As for brands, up until this year I religiously used Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard Whey, but I'm currently using MyProtein Whey. You get a good amount of protein per serving without any added sugars and stuff and it's very cheap considering its quality. So it's all around win really.
