WATCH "THE BEYONCE EXPERIENCE" on BET Thursday, November 22, Thanksgiving Night at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).
November 19, 2007 -- When Beyonce first announced the idea of creating an all-girl touring band to support her CD, B'Day, some folks thought she was crazy. But not her long-time creative director, Kim Burse. She only had two weeks to put it together, but Burse realized right away that she and the rest of Beyonce's creative team had a chance to make history. For the last eight years, Burse has been working as Beyonce's creative director, with her music director Frank Gatson. Both are responsible for the look, feel and sound of Beyonce's stage performances.
"As always its based around whatever music project that she has out," Burse said. "With the sound of the songs on B’Day, she wanted it to just be very empowering because that’s how the lyrics came across, so she wanted that to come across in the stage show. It was a big motivation for her to have an all-female band. Once she decided she called me and Frank and gave us two weeks to put the band together because they are going to perform with [her] on the BET Awards."
Burse and the team rose to the challenge setting up auditions in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago and New York City. Over 1,000 women turned out in the cities for a chance to show their skills on keys, guitar, drums, bass and percussion.
"I was very amazed at the turnout and the caliber of musicianship was great," Burse says. "It was great to be in a position where I had more than enough to choose from. It was a joy doing that for her. Beyonce is very headstrong about what she wants and I knew if put the right people in front of her she would know within herself that this person could hold it down. You don’t have a show at all unless you get your music right."
Finalists in each city were chosen for a final cut in New York City, where Beyonce and her musical support team would choose ten that would ultimately make the band. But when it came down to drummers, Beyonce was stumped, ultimately going with two. That's just how good the talent was.
Folks may have initially thought that the selection of an all-female band was a gimmick, but Burse says it was a serious undertaking from the get-go. After a year and a half on the road, traveling around the world with The Beyonce Experience tour, many female players who would have had a harder time being discovered have gained valuable resume points.
"Kudos to Beyonce," says Burse. "Who would have known if this particular type of opportunity was even available for a female player? Now you can see these girls really did play. In the tryouts, it was not a game. It was not a joke. They crushed it. I’ve been in charge of all the music for the past eight years and I’d never put somebody behind [Destiny's Child or Beyonce] that can’t play on the caliber of the bands that they’ve played with."
With Beyonce's tour coming to an end, it is possible that this band may stay together and grow creatively along the lines of bands like Prince's Revolution, Earth Wind and Fire's bands or even Lenny Kravitz, well-known for longtime band members like his female drummer Cindy Blackmon. One of Beyonce's most well-known band members is Bibi, the tattooed, Afro-ed guitarist who's often front and center with her sizzling solos.
But Burse says even she's not sure what's next for the all-girl crew.
"You can look at Earth, Wind and Fire and see some of the integral people that stay the same and then think of the success of Prince and the Revolution. That’s going to be a decision that’s going to be up to Beyonce. Whatever the new project is going to be, she’s gong to be a step higher each time she comes out. We’ll have to wait and see what happens."
Don't miss the special, airing Thursday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

The DVD was sold out in every store I checked. However, I just bought the Live Audio exclusively from iTunes. I had to support my bitch some way. I will be looking for the damn DVD today and I won't give up until I get my copy.

I'll be honest, I didn't expect this performance. Yes I expected Irreplaceable, but definitely not with Sugarland.
This version I gotta hear.

She never ceases to amaze! I don't really listen to country, but the performance did make me start listening to Irreplaceable again.
