OK, so, before moving onto the next proper update (and the Top 50 albums) let me get this one out of the way.
Here's the Honorable Mentions of the albums!
Circuit Des Yeux - 'In Plain Speech' (Art Pop/Experimental)
Wish I had given this more, proper attention, it's a really fine experimental-pop record for fans of U.S. Girls, and Julia Holter's earlier stuff. Also, her vocals kinda sound like a mix between Zola Jesus and Antony.
Courtney Barnett - 'Sometimes I Think and Sit, Sometimes I Just Sit' (Indie Rock/Alternative)
I like this girl a lot! Which is why I don't really understand why I didn't really care for this record that much. Her vocals are really hit-or-miss for me, but the songwriting and storytelling is great! Hope she wins over Meghan Trainor and James Bay tbh.
D'Angelo and the Vanguard - 'Black Messiah' (Neo-Soul/R&B)
This is a great album, but it was released in the middle of the transition between 2014 and 2015, which left me a little bit confused, because I couldn't put it in my 2014 list, and I forgot about putting it in the 2015 one. Messy, I know. Still, great album, though!
Dawn Richard - 'Blackheart' (Alternative R&B/Pop)
Honestly, the first impression I had about Dawn Richard was the same I had with Jhené Aiko and her fake image of being “woke” and “different” when her music was generic and boring... gladly, this wasn't really the case with Dawn, as she would later prove with this album that she's definitely worth it, and I'm excited for what she'll bring in the future.
Elysia Crampton - 'American Drift' (Plunderphonics/Electronic)
A nice, futuristic sample-based record made by Bolivian lady Elysia Crampton, sounds like a mix of like, Bomba Estéreo and Oneohtrix Point Never, also appreciate the Latin influence all over the record, there are a few bops in it as well!
Fetty Wap - 'Fetty Wap' (Pop Rap/Trap Rap)
Literally any song on this album could become a successful single... which is probably the biggest problem - most of the songs sound way too similar. Still, he's probably one of the most interesting mainstream rappers out there, to be honest.
Helm - 'Olympic Mess' (Ambient Dub/Electronic)
A surprisingly cool, detailed mix of Electronic, Noise, Ambient and Techno music, probably one of my favourite experimental records of the year. There's even an ASMR track! Queen Holly Herndon ha influence is real!
Jenny Hval - 'Apocalypse, girl.' (Art Pop/Experimental)
This norwegian singer/songwriter like a mix of, like, Sia, Portishead and Laurie Anderson - except that most of her lyrics are centered around uncomfortable themes, like sex, feminism, aging, presented in a really intriguing, dark way.
Jlin - 'Dark Energy' (Footwork/Electronic)
I like this, but I also feel like some of the songs in here are just way too similar, and perhaps a little too sharp, but it's probably one of my favorite Footwork releases, and the track feat. Holly Herndon is a certified bop.
Liturgy - 'The Ark Work' (Experimental Rock/Experimental)
This is... a thing. I kind of love some of it, though. Whatever this is...
Miguel - 'Wildheart' (Alternative R&B/Neo-Soul)
This is an album that's meant to be a whole experience, I guess, which is probably the main reason I didn't listen to it that much. But Miguel is definitely super talented, and this album is great!
Miley Cyrus - 'Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz (Neo-Psychedelia/Psychedelic Pop)
So, OK, yeah, this was a bit messy, and there was a lot of filler, but it's nowhere near as close as terrible as some people (A****** F******) made it out to be, and the fact that, who is probably one of the biggest popstars on the planet, would release a 23-track, 90-minute experimental/psychedelic rock album out of nowhere, FOR FREE is kinda impressive, even if you don't like her that much.
Mount Eerie - 'Sauna' (Avant-Folk/Experimental)
Actually, this was one of the first records I've heard this year. And I liked it! But... it kind of got old for me way too quickly? Either way, it's really comfy, but still has a really dark, unsettling vibe, kind of like Julia Holter making a collab with Sunn O))) or something like that.
He's also hilarious.
Rabit - 'Communion' (Grime/Electronic)
The second best electronic album titled 'Communion', released by white gay male this year! Nah, but really, this is actually pretty intense, check this out if you're into Evian Christ and/or Arca.
Ryn Weaver - 'The Fool' (Synthpop/Electropop)
The singles are great, but I feel like this isn't really a debut album, it's more like the sound of an artist trying to define herself. Still, most of the hooks in this album are really interesting, and the opening track is incredible.
Selena Gomez - 'Revival' (Dance-Pop/Electropop)
While this album probably doesn't have any strong highlights, besides "Hands to Myself" and "Me and the Rhythm", I guess this is really how you make a mature, mainstream pop album, and while there isn't as many bangers as there were on 'Stars Dance', it's still nice.
Skylar Spence - 'Prom King' (Nu-Disco/Electronic)
So, Saint Pepsi decided to stop making Vaporwave (although there are some influences in the record), changed his name due to copyright issues, and finally released his debut album. Which was actually cool?
The Chemical Brothers - 'Born in the Echoes' (Big Beat/Electronic)
This album is really fun and diverse. Not exactly their best album, to be honest, but it's nice to see that this guys are still making people dance in 2015.
V/A - 'PC Music Vol. 1' (Bubblegum Bass/Electronic/Pop)
YES GUYS I'M STILL A PC MUSIC FAN. This would obviously make my top 20... if this was an actual album. It isn't, though.
Wolf Alice - 'My Love Is Cool' (Indie Rock/Alternative)
It's like a mix of all the different alt-rock subgenres created in the 90s. Yet, they still have more personality than anyone else playing on Alternative radios in the U.S., I guess, so they still win?
Honestly, TRF.
