Reeces' Best Of '08: Top 30 Albums (27-26)
27. Janet Jackson - Discipline
Released: February 22nd
Genre: Pop, Dance
Producers Janet Jackson (exec.), Jermaine Dupri (exec.), Rodney Jerkins, D'Mile, Jermaine Dupri, Stargate, David Gough, Tricky Stewart, The Dream, Shea Taylor
US Billboard 200: #1
I was addicted to this album at the beggining of the year. Janet is back with an edgier dance record with a team of hitmakers on her side, including Ne-Yo and The Dream. I love the fact that throughout the album, she talks to and interacts with a computer DJ named Kyoko. Her voice is robotic and synthetic on tracks like the lead single Feedback or the Daft Punk sampling So Much Betta. You can hear a more sexual side on the title trackDiscipline, which is a little over the top, but I still enjoy it. Sadly, the album didn't do so well in the charts, but that doesn't make the album less amazing.
Standout Tracks:
- "So Much Betta"
- "Luv"
- "Feedback"
- "2night"
- "The 1 (Feat. Missy Elliott)
26. Brandy - Human
Release: December 5th
Genre: R&B
Producers: Brandy Norwood, Rodney Jerkins (exec.), Chase N. Cashe, D'Mile, LaShawn Daniels, Mike Donaldson, James Fauntleroy, Paul Foley, Toby Gad, Brian Gardner, Hit-Boy, Brian Kennedy, Erik Madrid, Bruno Mars, Midi Mafia, Jordan Omley, Chris Plata, RedOne, Dapo Torimiro, Soundz
This album barely made the list because it leaked when I was getting ready to compile this album list. Other than most of her singles, I have never heard a full Brandy album, so the end result was a great surprise. The lead singe Right Here was basically the reason why I decided to listen to it, and I'm sure it would've ranked higher if it would've been released earlier. The album is vocally perfect, tracks like second single Long Distance and Natasha Bedingfield co-written Fall make her voice shine beautifully. Up-tempo tracks like The Definition and Piano Man have the potential to be big hits and get her back in the game. Human is a mature sensitive album, definitely one of the best of the year.
Standout Tracks:
- "Right Here (Departed)"
- "Piano Man"
- "Fall"
- "Long Distance"
- "Camouflage"
