Having lived in Africa for 15 years (Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and South Africa), I can say it's a beautiful country with beautiful people that is just portrayed negatively in Western media, thus why there is a lot of animosity toward the West (The United Sates in particular). Oh and our schools are quite advanced academically speaking.

Anyway I imagine Africa as a beautiful continent with very nice people but there's a lot of poverty there. It's not as technologically advanced as western society however it's not as backwards as people imagine it except in the villages plagued by poverty where people struggle to get water.

I mean Kenya is not the only country in Africa and just because they're fairly-developed and are doing quite well for themselves doesn't mean that the entire continent is that way. Let's talk about Liberia or Nigeria or Congo for a second.

A lot of the Africans I know have said it's nothing like what's portrayed in the media. Some of them have even told me that their homes in Africa are bigger than their 5 and 6 bedroom homes here in the States. It's definitely a lot more developed than what Western Civilization gives it credit for.


The reason why the media shows the poor side of Africa is to tap into the emotional realm of a person, to get Americas to see the poverty there, and get them to open up their wallets and donate. Let's be honest here, who would donate to a "Feed The Children" campaign where the kids are eating caviar in their silk gowns?
