I don't think The Hobbit has the same appeal as LOTR. It's very childish by comparison, but we'll see.

That's true and now that I think of it, will both Hobbit movies be seen as a part of The Lord of the Rings saga, or will they be seen as a seperate franchise on their own?

They'll be viewed as the same with PJ directing and the character/cast overlap.

ROTK's gross would probably adjust to at least $1.5B these days, without 3D.
