On top of all this the US has found huge amounts of oil in its country too. Since the US mainly buys from Canada their oil value isn't as profitable as before.

When the oil price was over $100, the guverment made the budgets for the country based on a proce of $70, where's the rest of that money? Why goverment people have more than 5 houses in the majority of the states, private planes, expensive clothes, their chilldren right now are living out of Venezuela, and all that right know while the country is suffering? Chavez's daughters never worked, and they have houses all around the world, there's the money of this country.

That's an issue of corruption. They wouldn't be able to live so lavishly without the money from oil. Now that oil drops in price, they can't make as much to continue their spending. If I'm not mistaken Chavez thought it was a good idea to not only nationalize the oil, but make prices of goods really cheap.

Honestly the country is a mess and it's the fault of the government. Never depend on one source of income.

Drop in oil prices are a factor, but there not the entire cause of the situation. Venezuela has been falling apart for years, and the drop in oil prices is rather recent in comparison.

From a perspective of a citizen of an ex-communist country I always cringe when I see that meme from Tumblr "**** this, I guess I'm a democratic socialist!!!!111!!". Capitalism is bad but it's the best system we can have. Socialism is nothing but an utopia. All the socialism does is making all citizens equally poor (as you see in Venezuela - both rich and poor people lining up for bread) and killing the economy of countries.

OT: The worst thing is that we can't even help. Economy of my country was bad af before USSR fell apart, people were also lining up for food in hours-long queues but we always had medicines and no one was hungry, we were just extremely poor. It makes me so sad because citzens of Venezuela with their oil stocks really had chances to live peaceful and prosperous lifes and they have to deal with all of this

Venezuelan's salary was just increased in 50 % which, for us, is a bad thing because everything is going to be even more expensive from september on.

Most of the food grown in Venezuela (~90%) does not get distributed to the general populace but is instead sold off to Colombia where the vendors are able to mark up the food prices to much higher margins than they could get in Venezuela.

People are starving because they have to wait hours in a line for food.
