The thing is that racism exists not only outside but also within the black community. I've heard black people say how they prefer light skin, straight hair, etc. But I believe one day we will get one.
Lupita is EXTRA DARK. There's not even that many girls here in the US that dark. Most of us black people are mixed with something somewhere down the line.
I feel like there aren't many girls who are as dark as Lupita, at least in the US. So to find a popstar out of the small demographic that is...it's probably not very easy.
Lol. There can be. But be honest, when was the last time we really had a dark skin woman take the pop world by storm? The dark skin artists listed here are mostly R&B which is already a dying genre. Lets see a dark skin woman gush out some Rihanna bops, or some Dr.Luke, then we can start talking. The market of the darker girls seem to be slim to none.
With lighting, photo shop and make up she could at time look light. But she clearly wasn't.
Look at the cover of her debut album or her earlier live performances

Yeah... I'm Jamaican and light skinned (called coolies) are seen as more valuable the dark skinned people and that's why we have a skin bleaching epidemic.

Kelly Rowland showed real potential with WHEN LOVE TAKES OVER
And up with everybody forgetting the initial ww crossover act: DIANA ROSS
Whitney Houston was dark skinned. As was Janet. But these days every woman wants to be lighter. And its evident. Every "dark" female artist gets lighter and lighter as their careers progresses.
