I remember when Whatever premiered. As a ten (?) year old, I was watching BET one day in the late summer. Coming on the heels of Don't Let Go, it was a big WTF moment. Where were the hooks?

I finalized my own scores today and I have a couple of thoughts:

• I'm coming away from this rate with a much greater respect for Salt-N-Pepa. "Push It" is one my favorite songs of all time, but I didn't know much of their other music. Turns out their beats were sick and their awesome socially conscious messages are sorely missing from the contemporary rap scene.
• Damn, En Vogue could sing! But, discounting PCD, they probably have the most uneven discography—a lot of indisputable classics and some real clunkers.
• None of these groups can touch TLC. Their singles catalog is basically flawless; nearly half the songs are a 10!
• Destiny's Child never gave poor Michelle any respect. Even in their later era of more solo equity, she only ever takes lead on the middle eights...
• My scores for the Pussycat Dolls were higher than I was expecting. A lot of their music is utter trash, but "I Don't Need a Man" might be the best song they ever recorded. Why did it flop so bad?

Just sent my rates in.
And according to what my 16 year-old ears have heard...

En Vogue is the best group vocally. But their songs are just not my taste. I am mystified that they did not make more Free Your Mind's cause that song is . There are elements of rock, pop, country, R&B and even some choral! Most of their singles are lackluster to me though.

PS. I wonder why they look totally different from each video.



TLC has a very diverse discography with a mix of funky, sexy and mid-tempo songs! I gave both Damaged and Unpretty perfect scores because they are both enchanting and deserved it. I wonder why Left-Eye is always wearing those glasses with a condom stuck on one lens though.



Salt N Pepa is the only group that I haven't given at least one perfect score to. They have really great songs but none crosses my Perfection lane.



Pussycat Dolls shouldn't be in this rate at all. As much as I love them, they do not work as a group as much as the other four do. Their singles are all great except for one.

Destiny's Child probably got the highest votes from me. Their music is really friendly and they are the second best group vocally.
