True. They deserve the benefit of the doubt in this respect. However, they're misidentifying the issue. White lives have always mattered. It's just that "poor lives", of any race, are generally disregarded. Buuuuut, if that was their platform, they'd have to advocate for more than just poor whites. And they wouldn't dare.
So it behooves them to make it racial and not classist. Hence the confederate flag. It's the same misconception that politicians have exploited in maneuvers like the Southern Strategy. And poor whites will eat it up because of their internalized racism. Then they still remain poor, and all they have is their fabricated sense of superiority over minorities.
It's a sad cycle.
