The success of 21 in this era is an anomaly. But that doesn't mean it would be one if it was released 2-3 decades earlier. As I said, take it for what it is.

The obvious answer is The Bodyguard.

Before Whitney died, the album had already sold 42 million copies, more than any other album listed. IWALY was #1 in like 20 something countries. It was #1 on more than one genre chart, which means the song appealed to more than one audience, unlike the others listed...same goes for the album. Not only that, Whitney swept every awards show in 1993 and 1994, and was still winning awards for the album in 1995. And once again, it won awards in more than one genre specific category, unlike the other albums. The tour sold out on 6 continents, had over 120 dates, and grossed over $100 million. Not to mention playing to 55, 000+ ppl in South Africa.

None of the other albums appealed to MULTIPLE markets and genres of music like The Bodyguard.
