Madonna did it smartly. She ripped off things that weren't mainstream. Also, she was lucky. When she ripped off things that were mainstream, there was no internet for people to make a comparison collage 5 minutes after she ripped them off.

She found her 'originality' in underground clubs. She did it smartly though I agree.
The internet has changed pop culture immensely. Now there is always someone copying someone else.

Originality within the music industry died a long time ago. Most major pop stars are built by teams!!!! ...But we not even going to get into all that.

If you aren't interested then leave. These posts are off topic and unnecessary. If you aren't going to add to the discussion raise your post count elsewhere. I recommend RT.

I already commented about the topic itself, and was responding to someone else after they responded to me.
And I don't see a moderator title under you username so I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell me what to do.
Thanks much.

Most artists (if not all) aren't exactly original in the sense of originality since in most cases their style was derived from another artist. But, when it comes to mainstream music people think a song not being about ***** poppin in a club is original. So it's all about how you look at it I suppose.

She still sounded like Britney, but used previous styles that were good and she was good at and added new elements. Femme Fatale still sounds like the Britney we know from the early-mid 2000s, yet has dubstep and electronic influence. Britney takes from the teen pop she was in and dubstep along with elements she's attained over time, and poof, she has Hold It Against Me. The amount one is influenced by an artist varies, not every artist is the same and by now it seems like everyone should know by now each one has a different story behind that and should not be considered under the same circumstances.

And do note that I feel the same way about Rihanna. She is one of the most
original pop artists on the scene and is always forward-thinking while
remaining true to herself and her fanbase. In my opinion, she's the
modern day Madonna in terms of completely evolving into
a different entity with every album.

Actually, she ripped off things that people could notice, like Blondie, Marilyn, Marlene and even a little Cyndi. And people weren't exactly shy about pointing it out.
But now it's like she invented everything, and Gaga is just ruthlessly stealing from her. Oh, how the tides have turned. Maybe it's gonna be the same thing with Gaga 2-3 decades from now. Someone will put a pop star that bears a slight similarity to her under the same undeserved scrutiny and people will conveniently forget how Gaga got the same treatment.

I know, there's an interview where the interviewer asks her something like, "so you obviously copy Marilyn a lot, right?" She gets so mad but I can't find the video.

That thing was never original, and it was obvious.

While I agree with you on Rihanna's original style (of course), I was discussing and defending Gaga, and was not even putting Rih in the formula. Keep in mind that I respect Britney in every way and my post was not to criticize her in any way, so if that thought came up at all, disregard it.
Why did Rih come up anyways?

The answer remains the same: No. Not even Shakespeare.

Ugh, that Shakespeare bitch was always stealing from Ovid. I can't at anybody stanning for such a ****y copycat.
But in all seriousness, he should be, like, exhibit A in how new genius can emanate from recognition and celebration of our cultural past.

"It is so hard to be a writer these days when everything has been written." - Quote found in Egyptian writings circa 5000 BC.
There are many new things to be said, done and sung. Artists these days are just too lazy (or probably not good/talented enough) to create anything remotely original.
At least some artists try to add their own touches to their art, while some just blatantly steal and copy and that should be exposed.

The elementary particles and the fundamental interactions are the only "things" original in this universe, and then everything after those is mixed or unoriginal!
