There's no competition really. Taylor is in a whole other league than Kelly. Without Simon Cowell, no-one would have heard of Kelly Clarkson. Taylor did not need to go on American Idol to become an American Idol. She became the biggest selling American artist of her generation due to the power of her music alone. Taylor will be remembered in decades to come. Kelly will just be another reality show winner. An American Susan Boyle.

Kelly may have gotten public interest from AI in the first place, but she kept it and has had a successful career since then due to her music. Not American Idol. Notice how most AI winners (or even runners-up) are completely forgotten after they win? Or that they may have one successful album, but then they fade into obscurity? Kelly is one of the only singers from that show to have maintained a long and successful career.
AI got her name out there, and then she made a record with A Moment Like This. You could argue that the success of Miss Independent and Thankful overall was due to AI. However, Breakaway was a huge departure, and all of the acclaim and fame she had then had nothing to do with AI. That was purely because of her songs. She was worlds away from AI by then, and that's when she stopped being a singing competition winner. That's when she officially graduated to superstar, and she was the most relevant female singer of that time. She was the "it" girl of 2005. She rocked, and people across genres respected her and loved her music and were proud to say so.
Since then, My December was probably the furthest from AI she ever went, and even then Never Again was a hit single. All I Ever Wanted - My Life Would Suck Without You (which broke her AMLT record) and Already Gone - and then Stronger have maintained her star power. No one thinks of her as an AI singing competition winner now. That's where she started, but now she's had enough hits and enough staying power to be known as more. She's known as a vocal legend.
Sure, Taylor got into the business without a singing competition. But Kelly would have made it anyway, even if she hadn't been on American Idol. She'd already been offered record deals, but she was waiting for the right one. She would still be here now, regardless.
