Digital Track Sales Shatter Record
While I await the Nielsen SoundScan year-end report, with totals for the year, I wanted to post this week's results. The big news is that a record 42.9 million digital tracks were downloaded during the past week (which included Christmas Day, when people unwrapped their new iTouch-type gadgets and gift cards). That's 43% higher than the previous record total, 30.1 million (set last Christmas week). Flo Rida's Low led the charge, selling 467,000 copies, also a record. All but one song in the top 50 at least doubled its sales.
Album sales, as they always do after Christmas, crashed. I don't have the totals yet, but I do have the chart, which is headed by Mary J. Blige's Growing Pains, which moves up from No. 2 despite selling less than a third of her first-week total. She sold 204,000 this week, down from 629,000. Alicia Keys makes a similar move, up from No. 3 to No. 2 despite a drop from 474,000 to 193,000. And Josh Groban finally crashed, dropping 77% to 176,000 (down from 757,000 the previous week) and landing at No. 3.
The rest of the top 10: Now 26, Chris Brown, Eagles, Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, Hannah Montana 2 and Colbie Caillat.
More detail follows.
> The annotated top 10 (with added data for the week I missed, for those keeping score at home):
1-2 (last week)-NEW (2 weeks ago) Mary J. Blige (204,000; 629,000 last week; 835,000 total): Makes sense that if you take holiday albums out of the equation, Blige would be the top album.
2-3-2 Alicia Keys (193,000; 474,000; 2.54 million total): Down 59%, similar to most albums in the top 15.
3-1-1 Josh Groban (176,000; 757,000; 3.70 million total): Top-selling album of the year, an outcome approximately no one would have predicted.
4-6-4 Now 26 (98,000; 235,0000; 1.25 million total): Down 58%; still a favorite among the download-resistant crowd.
5-10-12 Chris Brown (87,000; 176,000; 1.05 million total): Keeps climbing the chart; its 51% decline is the second-lowest in the top 10.
6-4-3 Eagles (85,000; 313,000; 2.61 million total): No. 3 album for the year and biggest "conventional" album (Groban's a holiday album; No. 2 High School Musical 2 is a soundtrack). Off 73% this week.
7-12-10 Garth Brooks (77,000; 173,000; 1.33 million total): Down 56% but sold enough to return him solidly to the top 10.
8-8-8 Taylor Swift (77,000; 187,000; 2.24 million total): Down 59%, but this is a remarkable new-artist sales (and airplay) story.
9-5-7 Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus (73,000; 260,000; 2.49 million total): Down 72% as gift-giving fervor burns out a bit.
10-17-17 Colbie Caillat (72,000; 141,000; 1.10 million): Down 49%, lowest in the top 10, and thus resurges on the chart. Another remarkable new-artist story.
> This week's top 10 dropouts:
Nothing made a debut in the top 10, but Colbie and Garth returned, bumping Carrie Underwood (7-11 on the chart; 72,000, down from 216,000 in sales) and High School Musical 2 (9-12; 68,000, down from 185,000). HSM2's total is 2.96 million, No. 2 for the year.
> This week's debuts in the top 50:
None.
> Top track:
Don't have the top single info yet, so I'll give you a few more of the top downloads that trail Flo Rida's Low (No. 1 with 467,000, a 163% increase) on the chart. Timbaland & OneRepublic's Apologize sold 319,000 for No. 2, up 170% from last week. Chris Brown's Kiss Kiss is No. 3 with 277,000 (up 233%), and Soulja Boy's Crank That resurges from No. 11 to No. 4 with 271,000 downloads, up 299%. Top percentage gain in the top 30 tracks goes to the Jonas Brothers' S.O.S., which nearly quintupled its sales from 21,000 to 99,000 (+374%).

According to Hits Daily Double: http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi
KEYS TO HER SUCCESS: J’s Alicia Keys will return to the top of the chart this week for the first time since she debuted there in November, according to retail reports, with a total of 115-125k, which would be enough to vault her over Geffen’s Mary J. Blige at 110-115k.
