Back in 2006, I worked as the news director for People.com. People Magazine had just launched a country music special issue, and to celebrate the occasion, one of the “future stars” we featured wanted to come visit our offices and say hello.
Not many people were in the office that day—there were maybe seven of us who walked into a conference room to meet the singer, named Taylor Swift. With her record label publicist looking on, she walked around the room, shook each of our hands and introduced herself, then pulled out a guitar and played some new songs, including one called “Tim McGraw.” She was still a teenager, but already polished—gracious, funny, professional, and by the end of her third song we all felt like we had just made a new best friend.
