i blame the characters tbh.... i dont think is so much about being an adult or kid, but in zero the characters were more interesting, more complicated had some depth and development and they had motives for wanting the grail ...
in stay/night u have Emiya who is one of the worst protagonists ever... Tosaka (at least in the 2006) version abandons for no reason her own crusade for Emiya... Shinji is just there to make Emiya look good, Illyasviel is just a brat who becomes Emiya's loli and Souichirou he is just another character with no motive and no development,... the servants arent that bad but the zero servants were also better...
I am judging with the 2006 adaption in mind, the new version might and hopefully correct some things...
