''History'' was written in the aftermath of the ''American Life'' era, you know, the time in her career when half of the US boycotted Madonna because of her supposedly anti-nationalist video and song?
It was the first time in her career she really felt like she regretted her actions and she wanted to soften up her image. ''History'' is a great example of that, just take a look at the lyrics:

Hmm, that's really interesting. Even though it's not like I listened to "History" to know the lyrical meaning of it, I had the thought that the only COADF era songs that were possibly inspired by the AL backlash were "Like It Or Not", "Fighting Spirit", and maybe "Super Pop". So the COADF era was lighter because Madonna wanted it to be lighter, unlike Bedtime Stories?
