Ignoring the fact that Avril has already tried this formula several times in the last six years I think this is a great song. I swear I've played it like a thousand times and I still haven't got tired of it. I know the song makes absolutely no sense and the video is more or less of a self-parody but it just gives me this feeling of not caring about anything at all, it makes me wanna scream the lyrics through the window. So sad it flopped but it was to be expected.
Bastille "Things We Lost In The Fire"
The thing about Bastille is their ability to tell stories making use of experimental sounds to enhance the emotion they want to project. The result is rather unique and sounds completely fresh, a thrilling example of what great pop music can achieve. Things We Lost In The Fire is my favorite song of the album, it's hauntingly beautiful and it has a very artistic music video that goes well with it.
Emeli Sandé "My Kind of Love"
There are several reasons why this song made it this high. The lyrics have Emeli Sandé's very own style all over them, like reading a page straight from her diary. At first I was very reluctant when I found out they were releasing a remix version with RedOne, I thought it'd sound like Summetime Sadness, but to be honest I like the remix version better now. The second music video was very creative aswell. It's so sad the american market paid her dust I really hope she doesn't become a one-hit wonder cause she doesn't deserve it.
Imagine Dragons "Radioactive"
The multiformat smash makes its deserving appearance in my countdown. Radioactive was literally everywhere this year, whether you're into pop, rock, electronic or indie, you most likely listened to it more than once. It's just that great. The chorus is hypnotizing but my favorite part has to be its emotional and "dark" brackground powered up by amazing vocals. Definitely one of the most representative songs of 2013.
Tegan and Sara "Closer"
I knew this song was gonna end up being my #1 months ago. It wasn't even close (pun intended), wherever I went this year I took this song with me, it hasn't left my personal playlist and it probably won't leave it anytime soon. Tegan and Sara's new pop direction might have been controversial but it paid off so well in my opinion. We don't get many great love songs these days, this one is so creative it produces such vivid imagery. Even the music video is perfect. I wish parties were like that instead of people hooking up and getting drunk left and right.
