In August 2012, in the middle of her sold out Born This Way Ball, Lady Gaga blacks out all her social media profiles, and releases a surprise album on iTunes. The album, which for the most part is a rather regal luxe affair, delves even further into the hard rock styles explored on
Born This Way, but also explores slight R&B and soul. The album is lauded by critics, but is a moderate success, selling 2.5 million copies. The lead single, a ballad called "I Wanna Be With You", is released, and receives lukewarm success in the US (think a #7/#8 peak), but smashes internationally. The second single, "Red Lipstick", is released over the holiday season, and becomes a multi-week #1 in the US, while reaching the top 10 in 15+ countries. The third single, "Element of Crime", is released in early 2013, and peaks at #5, while topping several international charts.
Gaga does not tour for the album, and after a short hiatus, releases "Applause", the lead single for her 4th studio album
