Britney isn't respected, but she's respected by SO many up-and-coming artists. I mean, SO many female artists that have debuted within the last 5 years adore her: Gaga, Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira, Marina & the Diamonds, ADELE, Miley (I know she debuted more than 5 yrs ago but still), and Lana.
Can't deny that.

Why do I feel like her "respect" is more in the line of "I used to love Britney when I was in middle school"? She seems like a nostalgia act.

Right. Usher remains an R&B Legend and the Male R&B Artist of our time.
The only artist they use to keep trying to dethrone his impact is Michael Jackson, which can be used for everyone.

Except they claim her as an influence not just oh I like her song. Marina said that the entire Electra heart is inspired by Britney. Lana said that she normally doesn't care about females at all but Britney and her music and videos are isnpired by her and Adele skipped out on her own gig to go to the Circus tour 
Not to mention she is the blueprint for all the disney girls
