Radio is totally not here for him. Like I Can was a complete flop, poor him.
I just think he burned out really quickly. Before Lay Me Down was a single, it was my favourite song on In The Lonely Hour, but once it became a single, I got bored of it within two weeks.
Radio was obsessed with Stay With Me though. And liked Only One quite a bit.
I think those combined with Latch's success made them just kinda burned out on him.
Poor him? With his album selling 2.2mill in the US and 6 mill WW Im sure the checks rolling in will cheer him up. Alongside his current global hit. Artists care by far the most about success in their own country and WOTW is a no1 smash in the UK.

Havent seen it yet but apparently WOTW sounds awesome with the opening credits. Which is what it was specifically made for. I can imagine its a perfect fit. Hence the sudden huge WW itunes success.
The Weeknd isn't technically a new artist, just like Rachel Platten isn't technically a new artist, but both can be considered new artists for practical purposes (that is, they were not at all successful before 2015, and thus the vast majority of people who know who they are now did not before their respective hits).

Im not even a fan but Ive known his music for a few years. He was a well known artist (very well known in urban quarters)who could open with 100k even before 50shades success. Thats not new. Certainly not compared to Sam. Plus he hasnt sold Sams numbers or had the global success. Sam is proper mainstream impact. Yes, the male Adele.

Meghan really has made a huge impact. Her songs have been selling so well for a long time. If she came out with a strong first single for a new record, it would probably be massive
