Why are you surprised? Every pop girl since the dawn of modern pop music have been hit girls, next big things, label cash cows etc. both Ariana's albums have been solid and eons better than what her contemporaries are releasing. Let's just be grateful she's a cash cow who can sing great with decent music, that doesn't come around too often.
