Shakira hasn't even released "Illegal" to radio stations, nor is she doing absolutely ANY promotion.
If Shakira wanted to make radio fodder and score up consecutive crowd pleasing radio hits I assure you she would have no problem doing so. It's not like "Illegal" was released with the intent of being an enormous radio hit. She's not stupid. "HDL" was released because she knew it would be a hit, and she needed one to promote her
great album, which unfortunately was failing with "Don't Bother" (despite the song being a
GREAT song).
That's the difference with Shakira. She's a real artist and songwriter and musician. She is so huge globally that she can afford to release songs that aren't necessarily crowd pleasing cookie cutter radio shlock. So yeah, she released "Dia De Enero" and "Illegal" and "La Pared". Commercial flops, sure, but they were never intended to be some run of the mill 'Made for Radio' type of songs. They were artistic single releases, not commercial single releases. The fact that Shakira doesn't care to go all out and promote them should be an obvious indication of that.
If she would release a song like "Las De La Intuicion" and actually promote it, I guarantee you that she would have a world hit on her hands. Obviously at this point, sales aren't that big of deal to her. To think that Shakira "needs" Beyonce is absolutely ridiculous. Shakira just took home 5 Latin Grammies, a regular Grammy, and had the biggest song of the year worldwide, and one of the most successful tours of the year. Shakira doesn't "need" anything from Beyonce. Beyonce WANTS Shakira; it's not the other way around. Think about it buddy.
