It's not so much about sales that could have happened but that, for example, selling 8M in 2012 is equally impressive as selling 24M in 1999, as it is 3x harder to sell an album in 2012 compared to 1999

You can just ignore an album's score and look at its market share instead. The higher its market share, the higher it is ranked
