If the US charts were like in the rest of the world, HUNG UP would have been a no1 hit (like in each and every nation in the world) for at least 2 weeks while songs like We Belong Together would have peaked at no2 for one week. LOL
The audience numbers of Rhythmic and Urban radio were SO out of touch and inflated from 2004 to 2007. It did not represent reality at all. When they introduced new ways to count radio ratings in 2007 they realized how messed up the numbers were and radio industry insiders admitted that many of the songs that were massive on radio should have never been. Today's numbers are way more representative.
The audience numbers back then catered to the dominant genre at the time, just like it does now.
"Hung Up" should have definitely been #1 in the US for at least one week, I think it was #1 on digital songs for like 5 weeks, the public was clearly here for the song massively since Madonna's album sales also increased 3x from American Life (from 600k to 1.8m). Radio was just being extremely ageist and bitter and didn't want to give the song a chance because it was unlike anything else getting airplay in America.
it was sent to radio on Feb the 11th of 2008 and released on i-tunes on March the 25th! A massive 6 week sales suppression! Its collapse was extremely fast. It struggled to sell over a million.
Hung Up shouldn't have been number 1. Nobody cares for it/knows it. She couldn't even perform it for ha superbowl set because she knows the truth.
Are you for real?
It is the most successful single of her entire 31-year old career.
It's even in the Guinness book for hitting no1 in 41 different countries. The only song in history that has hit no1 in so many countries. And we're not talking about i-tunes. We are talking about official weekly Singles Charts.
