Speaking of gaps, the only Fire Emblem I've played is the very first one (on a ROM) and it got boring. I'm thinking about checking out Fates.

If you have the coin you should probably try Awakening first since it seems a little easier to get into than Fates (based on the gameplay vids I've seen), yet both are fundamentally similar enough that if you like Awakening you'll also like Fates. Both are probably more welcoming to newcomers since they have the player-insert avatar, things like marriages which are really popular, and obviously up to date graphics.
