Jon is a lot more important to the series than Catelyn was, both thematically and plot-wise if you believe the R+L=J theory (which is practically confirmed at this point). Catelyn's revival story is just a tale of revenge and how anger/trauma can completely change a person (GRRM has said that himself). Jon is likely much more important to the actual final outcome of the series.

Uh, Jon
does die in the books. The only difference is that because the books are told from the characters' viewpoints, they couldn't exactly have Jon describe his state of death, whereas the show can show his death from an objective omniscient view that the books don't have. But he definitely did die in the books.
