I think it was more that she was complacent, assuming she could just crap out hits no bother. I sense(d) an attitude of 'Oh, was BTW too difficult for you? Let me dumb it down.'
ARTPOP has some great moments, but it's like she generally didn't try hard enough to get the songs right*(presumably because she felt she didn't need to). Most evidently with the verses.
*By 'right' I mean as hit-worthy as they easily could be with different lyrics/production/melody tweaks.
